FOUR FOUND DEAD IN FAMILY ROW $30,000 Bank Account May Give Clue to Murder- Suicide Motive. By the Associated Press. NEWARK, N. J., September. 19.— Bank books showing deposits of ap- | proximately $30,000 were scanned by police today in their efforts to find wwotives which led Charles Russell | wieary, 43, to kill his brother, his two | wncles by marriage and then take his | own life. Yhe triple murder and suicide were | discovered early today after a man had telephoned pdlice headquarters to tell Patrolman Patrick McNamara, at the police switchboard: “Send police in a hurry to 938 South Twentieth street.” “What's the matter?” startled McNamara. “There are three murders and a sui- | cide,” replied the man on the phone. “What do you mean?” asked the policeman. ! | | asked the | | “I just killed three people.” The caller hung up. Bodies of Four Found. ‘Two minutes later radio police broke | down the door of the second-floor | apartment and found the bodies of | four men, three of them sprawled in the kitchen and the fourth lying on a divan in the sun parlor. The lights | were out, the doors were locked. | The body of John S. Geary, 42, brother of Charles, was lying near a window. A few feet away lay Orlando | Levan, 60. Near a door leading to the living room was Orlando’s brother, Benjamin, 55. Charles Geary was stretched out on & couch in the sun parlor a sawed- off shotgun at his feet. He had been | shot at close range through the heart. | | In his hip pocket police found a load- ‘ ed revolver. In a dress in the bed room police | found bankbooks made out in lhe‘ name of Mrs. Kate Levan, wife of | Orlando. She died three weeks ago | This Advertisement Illustrated by “ESQUIRE” |ater a stroke during a visit with rela- tives at Easton, Pa. Police calculated the deposits to to- tal $30,000. Beside Charles’ body was his wallet and a note with this inscription: “In case anything happens to me notify Mr. Guy Wiley, Tobeyhanna, Pa. “CHARLES R. GEARY. “Get Russ Frey, South Sterling, Pa.” Frey is an undertaker. Wiley told Capt. Rowe that Jobn Geary had been adopted by Orlando Levan when John was 2 years old. Mrs. Levan and the mother of John and Charles Geary were sisters, Mrs. Geary died some years ago. Her maiden name was Koken. From questioning tenants of the four-flat building where the tragedy occurred, police pieced together the | following story: Charlec drove from Tobeyhanna in | the early part of the evening and after a short visit with the Levans and his | brother, went out with Benjamin to | a nearby tavern where they had sev- eral drinks of beer. They then returned to the apart- ment and the four men sat about a Nat'l 8792 Lady’s THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, kitchen table discussing family af- fairs. About 11 pm. Charles left the group, walked outside, probably to where his car was parked at the back of the house, and returned a short time later. Rowe said that Charles had prob- ably gone out for the shotgun, loaded with six shells. As he re-entered the apartment he perhaps resumed the conversation where it had been broken oft and suddenly forced the -other three men to line up in front of him, hands held high and their backs to him. He then began firing, Rowe said. ‘Whistler in a Hurry. Whistler, the famous artist, once had to move hurriedly from London to Paris, and in the bustle forgot to pay his back rent. The agent for the estate lamented his loss, com- plaining to a friend that all artists were that way, and that all he could find in the empty house were a few pictures, and what value were they? These pictures, forgotten by Whistler, were among his very best and worth & hundred times the forgotten rent.
