PARIS, September 19.—The growth of the Prench fleet became increas- ingly noticeable yesterday with an an- nouncement that the new cruiser Gloire would be launched September 28 at Bordeaux. The Gloire will be the fourth in a series of six new cruisers of 7,600 tons each. The Marseillaise and the Jean de Vienne were launched July 17 and July 31. France would be likely to adopt the “principle” of sanctions if Eng- land led the way and obtained League approval, officials said, but any such punitive measures would-begin mildly and would never be backed by mili- tary force. In domestic affairs, Premier Pierre Laval's intention to bear down on anti-government agitation growing out of economjc depression was indi- cated by a report that the cabinet was considering suppression of & threatened tax strike by peasants. A stiffer government attitude to- ward the opposition over deflationary decree laws was indicated by the an- nouncement that Marcel Regnier, minister of finance, and Mario Rous- tan, minister of education, had sev- ered- relations with the functionaries’ unions in their departments because the leaders criticized Laval for apply=- ing pay cuts. G.STAT I'™Y THE EVE First Slum Clearance Unit Occupied by College Boys ATLANTA, September 19.—The United States’ first federally financed slum clearance project, developed as 8 pattern for the future, was occupled by college students yesterday. Keys to the unit, a specially de- signed dormitory of brick and stone, were turned over to Dr. M. L. Brit- tain, president of Georgia Tech, by D. A. Calhoun, district manager of the Federal Fmergency Administration of the P. W. A. Housing Division. Georgia Tech will run the dormitory for the Government on & non-profit- making basis. The dormitory, first completed of a group of 23 buildings which are mostly apartment ,hm, replaces old shacks dynamited with Secretary Ickes set- ting off the first charge. « Marking the Government’s first ven- ‘ture into slum clearance with its own money, the project includes one group for whites and one for Negroes. It was started last February. Calhoun sald the Government expects to use the housing types as & pattern for future developments. The dormitory unit just completed has three floors of 53 rooms each and will house 309 students. On each floor are four baths and five showers. Double rooms house four students, and single, two students. Each student gets a single bed with an open box spring, bought an the Government’s Navy contract. Desks, chairs and wardrobes also are pro- vided. Also on each floor are rooms for two faculty members, who act as coun- sellors. Rentals range from $8 to $10 a month for each student. Dr. Brittain described the dormitory system as “the perfect life for col- lege students” saying “it gives a school an opportunity to protect and look after its, students.” Apartment house units, to be com- pleted about the first of the year, will rent at $5.50 to $7.50 per room & month.
