Nature’s % BY LILLIAN COX ATHEY, N THE coast of Oregon the long-tailed lemming mouse, | also known as the rufous tree mouse, hunts the insects and, to give variation to its diet, slso dines on the vegetation to be fouad| in this region. Its closest cousins are the common meadow mouse, and for some time they were linked together under the scientific name of Phenacomys, which means “false mouse.” The distinc- tion, however, is in their teeth and| the fact that this cousin, whose pic- ture you see, has a great fondness for climbing trees, and builds his hand- some home in a Douglas fir. ‘There are 11 species and subspecies af this group known as lemming m'ce. This places them between the true lemmings. a heavy-bodied, short-tailed and blunt-nosed mouse of the Arciic regious, and the meadow mouse | (sometimes caled the Eastern vole),| known all over our country. In wet bogs, borders of lakes or ponds, or even in stony pastures,| where insects and vegetation sre| abundant, hunting is carried on day and night. The runways of their meadow mouse neighbors are used, and | this is why the two have so often been confused. The sexes are identical and the| seasonal change is too slight to be | noticeable. Looking down on them, you see they are a bright, rusty brown mixed with black. The throai is| white and underneath the white n-h-‘ is tinged with rusty brown. 7he| rest of the underbody is plumbeous | at the base. The slender tall is a| Rufous Tree Mouse (Phenacomys Longicandus). Children uniform chocolate brown, as are the feet. Tha home, as you see, is roomy. Nothing has been over'ooked for com- fort and safety. You will notice two exits. No danger of the owner being trapped by a foe. The lower door is inconspicuous, while the front en- trance bespeaks hospitality, though in this case it is the convenience of the builder that causes fhe wide-open portals to be placed in such & posi- tion. The youngsters are born in this type of home and at first they are nude, like all other baby mice. But soon they are covered with the most beautiful dark gray, fuzzy clothes, | which later become sleek and reddish brown. The total length of the adult is about 6 inches. The blunt head and small ears, that are so modestly h'd- den, do not give you any idea of the alertness of this animal. His long, handsome whiskers redeem the ap- parent oversight. So you take a sec- ond look and realize the bright, beady eyes have not missed a thing. (Copyright. 1935.) Who Are You?! The Romance of Your Name. BY RUBY HASKINS ELLIS. 'HIS surname is derived from “Gua- renna or Varenna,” in the County | of Calais, Normandy, from which the family came to England in the days| of the Norman conquest. The mean- ing of the word is to stop, repel or| ward off. The family of Warren traces its history to the Earl of Warren, who lived in Normandy in 1050, and to the first English ancestor, William, the first Earl of Warren and Surrey, in 1086, ‘The coat of arms here shown is bla- poned: “Chequy or and azure, on & eanton gules, a lion rampant argent. "THE dogs of another world-wide war are being let slip in Africa,” wrote an editor the other day. Did the editor know he was para- | phrasing Shakespeare? He must | have, “Dogs of War” is a familiar meta- phor for the horrors, the unbridled passions, the brutal, vicious savage- ries and stupid animalities which de- cide armed conflicts between so-called civilized nations. ‘We owe this grisly figure of speech | to Shakespeare. It is from his “Julius Caesar,” act 3, 1, in the dire words of | Marc Antony, who, anent the murder of Julius Caesar, cries: “A curse shall light upon the limbs of men: Domestic fury and fierce civil strife Ehall cumber all the parts of Italy; | Blood and destruction shall Je so in use, And dreadful objects so familiar, ‘That mothers shall but smile when they behold Their infants quarter'd with the hands of war; All pity chok'd with custom of fell deeds; And Caesar’s spirit, ranging for re- venge, With Ate by his side come hot from hell, Bhall in these confines with a mon- arch’s voice Cry ‘Havoc,” and let slip the dogs of War; That this foul deed shall smell above the earth, With carrion men groaning fof burial.” 1935.) Melt two table- spoons butter in a saucepan, add three tablespoons flour and blend well. Pour in one 16-ounce can cream of mushroom soup and cook, stirring constantly, until thickened (this will require only from five to eight minutes produces a delicious, creamy mushroom sauce).
