B~ the Associated Press. NEW YORK, September 16.—The price of domestic copper was raised today to 9 cents a pound from 850 cents, the level which has prevailed since August 19. On that date the price rose from 8 to 8.50 cents a pound on record sales. Improved demand during the past few months for the metal has been a factor in the rise in the prices of both the domestic and foreign com- modity and today’s upturn had re- cently been expected in copper circles. At the new price of 9 cents for domestic copper quoted today the | metal, now stands a full cent above the 8-cent level to which it declined | following the demise of the N. R. A. copper code. Higher prices for export copper were said to have been stimulated by an | increase in consumption mainly in | Great Britain, Japan, Italy and Sweden. Sharper demand has been | attributed both to improved industrial | activity and to military needs. ‘The export copper price has re- cently risen from 8.25 cents to around | 8.42 cents a pound. C, Holland Increases Discount Rate to Check Gold Flow By the Assoclated Press. AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, Sep- tember 16.—The Bank of the Nether- lands ‘today incremesd its discount rate from 5 per cent to 6 per cent. The increase was due to the desire to protect gold stocks and check the outflow of gold which started during the week end. It was understood the cabinet suc- ceeded in drawing up plans to balance the 1936 budget by a series of new, drastic economies, including salary cuts. Authoritative quarters expected that Premier Hendryx Colijn would an- nounce that the cabinet intends to take all steps necessary to defend the present gold parity of the guilder. Rallies at New York. Guilders held the center of the stage in world foreign exchange deal- ings today as the Bank of the Nether- lands raised its discount rate to 6 per cent from 5 per cent in an at- tempt to counter pressure on the cur- rency. ‘The guilder rallied sharply in New | York, up .12 of a cent at 67.50 cents. | Earlier in London, where the mar- ‘keb was reported to fear nearby de- valuation of the Dutch unit, the bank | rate announcement likewise caused improvement to 7.33'; to the pound.
