By the Associated Press. The Agriculture Department today noted sharp reductions in crop prospects during August, but fore- saw no shortage either of food or feed supplies. In its September 1 estimate of con- ditions, the board, said an ample supply of most food crops seemed as- sured, with certain classes of wheat the only important exceptions. Rust Damages Wheat. Further rust damage was reported to have lowered the wheat estimate by 13,000,000 bushels, or 2 per cent. The board said it was increasingly evident the domestic supply of hard red Spring wheat of milling quality would be below requirements. The total wheat crop, estimated at 595,000,000 bushels, would be the third smallest since 1904, only the 1933 and 1934 drought years producing less. The corn crop was estimated at 2,- 183,755,000. Barring early frost, the board said the supply of feed grain on farms should . be sufficient for the reduced numbers of live stock. A tendency to feed to heavier weights because of favorable live stock prices might result in feed supplies on farms at the end of the season being rather light, it added. Citrus Below Average. The condition of citrus in Florida and other Gulf States was reported considerably below average on Sep- tember 1 and the board said further damage was done by the tropical | storm last week. C, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1933. POSTAL SAVINGS BRING CONFUSION Wall Street Bankers at Sea Because of Discrepancy In Interest Rate. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, September 11.—Wall Btreet banking houses found them- and the deep sea, they confessed privately today in the matter of the estimated $50,000,000 of postal sav- ings deposits on which they are now generally paying 2!z per cent In- terest. Under a ruling of the New York State Banking Board they may not pay more than 2 per cent interest on time deposits after October 1. While Washington banking authorities, la- ing law and ruling appeared to be of the opinion that deposits of the postal savings system with commercial banks must receive not less than 2'( per cent. It was generally agreed in banking quarters here that barring a ruling from the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the New York institutions would be forced to give up their postal deposits before the end of the month. It was said in informed banking circles that the amount of postal de- posits in the large Wall Street insti- tutions was negligible in comparison to total deposits and probably less New York City institutions. e = DIVIDENDS ANNOUNCED dends declared (prepared by the Standard Statistics Corp.)
