By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, September 11.—The bull campaign in the stock market reached the proportions of a major drive today, but forward progress was | resisted by persistent selling. Several issues, including rails. com- munications and motors, rose 1 to 4 points to new 1935 highs, but the ad- vance was shaded somewhat by late selling. The list showed a strong un- dertone in the closing dealings, how- ever, and transfers aggregated 2,577~ 450 shares, the largest since July 26, 11934, when the total went over | 3,000,000. One transfer of 25,000 shares appeared on the tape, The preferred “B” jumped 3 points United States Gypsum rose as much | and Westinghouse Electric advanced 4. Gains of a point or two were reg- istered by such issues as Chrysler, Johns-Manville, Montgomery Ward, | Loew’s, New York Central, Great , i Northern preferred, Howe Sound, 1 ) % ) e % Greyhound and others. Professional bullish activity in the rails was said to be based both cn a | beliet that they were behind the mar- re' and the hope that chart readers and mh-r market technicians would take a more enthusiastic attitude to- ward the list, if the rails could be brought forward to “confirm” the advance in the industrials. On the brighter side for the rail- | roads was seen the gradual reviva’ heavy-goods industries, which cor | tribute the bulk of the profitabic ' | freight, and indications that some | roads were getting in a position to d 1, | some refunding and thus cut interest L B % +2' g +1% 2, 2 +1 g charges.
