HELP AND SITUATIONS WALK PROMOTER LIVES ON WHEELS Car Home of Man Who Aided Success of Weston, Famous Pedestrian. TOPEKA, Kans. (#).—A life on wheels has been that of Clarence ®iits, 60, who helped a despiser of ‘wheels become one of the world’s most famous pedestrians. Twenty-five years ago Ellis accom- panied Edward Payson Weston, 71- year-old hiker and holder of many world walking records, on his famous jaunt across the country from Santa Monica, Calif., to New York City. Weston Wins Wager. Weston walked the 3,611-mile dis- tance in 72 days 22 hours and 50 min- utes to win a wager—and a pot esti- mated by Ellis at $85,000—that he could do it in 90 days. When Weston set out from Santa | Monica, the Santa Fe Railroad, whose | line the hiker followed to Chicago, |; assigned Ellis to accompany him. Ellis | was a bridge inspector at Winslow, Ariz, and had spent most of his life | on railroad locomotives and cars. It was Ellis’ duty to arrange hotel | accommodations for Weston and tele- | graph his progress to newspapers and news agencies. But Ellis didn't walk a step of the | way. He rode on a small gasoline railway car. From Chicago to New York he rode in an automobile. Greeted by Crowds. “The hike created wide interest,” Ellis sald. “Large crowds gathered at | every hamlet, village, town and city | to greet Weston and cheer him on. Often persons who thought themselves good walkers tried their skill against his, but they didn’t last long.” Although now retired, Ellis is still living on wheels. converted it into a combination kitchen, dining room, living room and bed room.
