Suddath, 69, widow of Robert Suddath, died at her home here on Wednesday foilowing a short illness. She is survived by a daugh- ter, Mrs. Sadie A. Thompson of Be- thesda; a son, Edgar M. Landis, 75, mother of James M. Landis, a member of the Securities Exchange Commission in Washing- ton, D. C,, at her daughter’s home in Shanghal, China, Her death followed an illness of several months. Mrs. Landis lived in Japan more than 40 years with her husband, who was an instructor in the Meiji Gakuin Missionary College in Toklo. She is survived by three daughters and two sons, Mrs. Eleanor M. COOPER, RETIRED, EXPIRES Heart Disease Blamed for Death of Army Man at Alexandria Home. Col. Harry L. Cooper, U. S. A, re- tired, died of heart disease yesterday at his home in Belle Haven, Alex- andria, Va. He was 66. Funeral gervices with full military honors will be held at 10 a.m. tomor- row from the Port Myer Chapel, with Chaplain Ralph C. Deibert offici- ating. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery. Twice Decorated. Berving through various ranks in the Army, becoming a colonel in 1927 and retiring in 1933, Col. Cooper was twice decorated for heroism. He re- ceived the Distinguished Service Medal for his record in the World War and the Silver Star Decoration for gallantry in action during the Philippine insurrection of 1903. Born in Philadelphia, Col. Cooper entered the military service during the Spanish-American War as a first sergeant of Company C, 1st Penn- sylvania Volunteer Infantry. Later he was commissioned from this same organization. Distinguished in France. Commanding the 2d Army Corps School at Chatillon, France, during the World War, Col. Cooper won dis- tinction for organizing an effective training system. GEORGE W. HODGES VICTIM OF CANCER Foe of Business “Fakers” Expires in New York Hospital After Operation. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, September 6.—George W. Hodges, 66. president of the Better Business Bureau of New York City and foe of business “fakers,” died at the New York Hospital yesterday after | an operation a week ago for cancer. Hodges was a native of Foxboro, Mass. His ancestors were among the first settlers at Taunton, Mass., in 1635. | He started in the investment business in Boston with R. L. Day, investment broker, later forming his own firm here. He devoted the major part of his business career guarding brokers’ | ranks from unscrupulous dealers and | purging the business of fakers bent on muleting small investors. He was one of the founders of the Better Business Bureau, established in 1922, and was a former president of the Investment Bankers' Associa- tion of America. He is survived by his son, G. W. FUNERAL OF GILL PROBABLY MONDAY Assistant Director of Na- tional Park Service Heart Attack Victim. Funeral arrangements for James Francis Gill, 69, assistant director of the National Park Service, who died | of a heart attack in Danbury, Conn., yesterday, have tentatively been made for Monday morning. A solemn re- quiem mass is planned for 10 am. at the Church of the Nativity, with in- terment in Mount Olivet Cemetery. . Gill had charge of most of the buildings in Washington, and been in the Government service more than 40 years. He had absent from his office on sick ve nearly a month. It was while returning from Canada, where he went by motor for his health, that he died. He was a native of Philadelphia, where he was born September 8, 1866, and entered Federal service there as a postal clerk in 1893. He served in several departments here before be- | ing appointed an assistant director of | the Parks Service in charge of the! buildings branch when it was reor- ganized in August, 1933.
