CURB ADVANCES N LATE TRADING Heavy Turnover in Alcohols and Utilities Continues to Be Feature. By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, September 6.—A heavy turnover in alcohols and utilities con- tinued to provide the principal feature of the Curb market during late trad- ing today. Advances were in the majority and gains ranged from frac- tions to more than a point. Distillers Corp.-Seagrams was ex- tremely active and advanced more than a point to 27%, but encountered some stock at this level and slipped back a trifle. Hiram Walker also was in demand at higher prices, along with American Gas, Lake Shore Mines, Commonwealth Edison, Holly Sugar, Newmont Mining and Pitts- burgh Plate Glass. By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, September 6.—Hesi- tancy in the start of the Fall trade season was noted today by Dun & Bradstreet in its weekly review of business conditions. “Following the best Summer show- ing that some distributive branches achieved in six years, Fall trade made & rather faltering start,” it was de- clared. Adverse Weather Conditions. “Hurricane, floods and rain forced consumers to defer their planned shopping tours, while wholesale mar- kets turned quieter, in spite of sub- stantial reorders, as retailers awaited further evidence of the strength of buying power. “Industrial operations, however, were altered slightly by holiday influ- ences, the general average being ad- vanced, with outstanding progress re- ported for the cotton goods division of the textile industry.” In retail lines, it was stated, essen- tial needs in apparel and supplies in- cident to the opening of school made up the bulk of the volume, and the average increase for the country as a whole was estimated at 2 to 15 per cent over the corresponding week of | 1934. ‘Wholesale Markets Slow. “With most retailers unwilling to place large-sized commitments until | after the middle of September, at which time a more accurate appraisal | of the extent of the broadening of | Fall distribution can be made, whole- sale markets assumed the slowest pace | in more than a month,” the review continued. “While the shut-downs for the ob- servance of Labor day reduced output | in most divisions for the week, sched- ules were unaltered, enabled the average rate of industrial operations to exceed that of the comparative 1934 | period by 25 to 45 per cent, due to the declining trend at that time.” U.
