DAILY SHORT STORY- PROLOGUE By Vern Arlington. '‘HE shot shat- tered the Au- tumnal peace of the park and in the space of a few seconds a crowd had gathered, as crowds always do, from nowhere. Men who had been strolling, or loung- ing on the benches, women who had been wheeling per- ambulators — every one who had been part of the casual stream of park life on an Autumn eve- ning, had suddenly become a crowd. In the center of the crowd, and the focal point of its interest, was the young man who had been shot. Of- ficer Shayne, hav- ing already sent in an emergency call for an ambulance, bent over the young man, then stood up and announced: *He's dead, all right.” nite tones and rich phrases, requested the crowd to please keep its dis- tance, J; “Any one know how it happened? the officer asked, addressing himself to the crowd generally. “I do,” said a lounger. “Saw the whole thing—scared the devil out of me, too——" o 'HE lounger went on: “Well, I was sitting on that bench: * point- ing to one whose back was against a fringe of bushes, beyond which the ‘boulevard ran past, “and this guy was gort of walking up and down, looking &t his watch once in a while, like he | was waiting for somebody. Then he leaned up against the lamp post for & while, and lit a cigarette. “A car pulled up just the other side ©of those bushes. Couple of guys got out, came through the bushes, and went up to the other guy—the one that's dead. They said something to him and he said something back. I couldn't,” very regretfully, “hear what they said. Then I heard him yell, ‘Don't!” Then I heard the shot. The two guys got away in their car, Guess that's all.” “Guess it is,” said Officer Shayne. He looked down at the dead young man. “Funny,” he remarked to the ambulance men who had just ar- rived. “‘He doesn’t look more than 25, but his hair's gray.” An hour later Officer Shayne was | sitting on the same bench from which the lounger had made his observa- tions. The quiet which hung over the park now was accentuated in the officer’s mind by his recollection of the frantic excitement of an hour | before. How quickly that curious crowd had dispersed; how quickly, coolly, the coroner had made his in- vestigation, given his tentative ver- dict. Just another gang killing, they had all decided. Officer Shayne thought of the young man with gray | hair, resting now on a slab in the morgue, * x Kk % (OFFICER SHAYNE heard & voice: “Have you the time, please?” He looked up into the friendly, very pretty face of a shabby, wistful-look- ing girl. She was about 20, he'd have guessed, and in need of a good meal. “Little after 10,” he told her, “Time for voung girls to go home.” “What if he doesn’t come.” Then, in defi- | She laughed and " sat down on the bench next to Of- | ficer Shayne. “It's nice having the law so near,” she said. Shayne was beginning to be impressed with her naivette,. Ke grinned a slow, re- luctant, but sin- cere, grin. “I'm only a lit- tle late, but since Donal's even later, I don’t mind much.” “Who's Donal?” asked Officer| Shayne, just as| though it were his | business. “He's the fellow I'm eloping with. Didn't I tell you? That is—we aren't eloping exactly, be- | | cause there's nobody to run away from. | But we're going away to be married.” | An anxious frown appeared on her brow. “I wish I could have got here? at “Why at 92" asked Officer Shayne, puzzled, | kK o WELL our arrangement was that I was to get here at 9, if I could. | | If I couldn’t, he was to wait a while, | | then go away to get some things at | his room, and come back at 10. If I could have made it at 9, we'd be | gone by now. On the train, I mean.” | | “An hour doesn't make much dif- | terence, does it?" 0—unless he's met—them.” “Them?” She looked at him a moment and | then said very quickly: ‘3 don't know why I'm telling you all this— | | guess it's because I like your face. | You see, Donal used to belong to & gang—a pretty bad bunch. That was | before he met me. They did all sorts of awful things—stole, and— Any- way, he broke off with them when he | met me. They didn't like that very | much. They kept after him to come | |back in with them, He wouldn't. | That's why we're leaving town. To be away from them.” | | Officer Shayne stood up. “You got your nerve, telling stuff like that to {a cop.” | “But such a nice cop!” she said.| | A solitary figure strolled into sight. | | She looked eagerly to see if it were Donal. It wasn't. She sighed, as the figure passed on. | “Good-by,” said Officer Shayne, “and—good luck.” * K K x SHE smiled up at him. “Won't you | i stay and meet Donal? You'll like }hlm. He's so good-looking. And he’s | got pretty gray hair. Doesn't make him look a bit old, either. He's only | 26" she added. | “What if he doesn't come?” asked Officer Shayne. “Oh, he'll come all right. He's got | to. Donal would never stand me up. I quit my job tonight—that's what kept me, fixing things up for the new girl. Donal knew I was going to quit.” | She patted her purse, “I've got our | train fare here.” Officer Shayne walked away a few | steps, hesitated, turned back. “I would- | n't wait for that gray-haired guy too | long, sister. Mostly, men ain’t worth it.” The girl smiled and settled back on the bench. “I'd wait for Donal for- | | ever,” she called out, as Officer Shayne vanished into the dark. (Copyright. 1935.) DR.
