HELP AND SITUATIONS. D. C. MEN QUALIFY FOR FLYING CLASS 2= Famed Airship-Balloon Pi- lots Included in Texas Program. Eight Army airship and balloon pilots, most of whom have attained international fame in balloon competi- | © tion; 6 offfters from branches of the service, 2 of them Washingtonians; 13 Army enlisted men and 132 candi- dates from civil life, 2 of them resi- dents of this city, are members of the new class now being organized for a year of flying instruction at the Army Air Corps Training Center, Randolph Field, Tex. ‘The Washingtonians in the class are Becond Lieut. Stephen O. Fuqua, jr., Infantry, son of the former chief of Infantry; Second Lieut. Richard T. Coiner, Cavalry, and William George Grafl and Alton B. Moody, both of whom were appointed from civil life. Four Ratings Sought. The Army lighter-than-air officers, ‘who will seek to add the ratings of air- plane pilot and airplane observer to the ratings of airship pilot and balloor observer, giving them all four existing ratings, are Capts. Karl S. Axtater, Courtland M. Brown and Douglas Johnston, and First Lieuts. Uzal G. Ent, Reginald R. Gillespie, Ralph E. Holmes, Wilfred J. Paul and John G Balsman. Most of the balloon and airship officers have played prominent parts in the national and international bal- loon races for the Gordon Bennett Trophy and Lieut. Ent holds the Dis- tinguished Flying Cross and the Cheney award for heroism in endeavor- ing to save the life of his companion killed by lightning, while plunging to earth in a burning balloon. Axtater Has War Record. Capt. Axtater, who at the age of 42 years is starting his career as an air- plane pilot, became & balloon pilot at the beginning of the World War and served as a balloon pilot and observer in the St. Mihiel, Verdun and Meuse offenstves. Lieut. Paul was winner of the 1932 national balloon race, in which he established new distance and duration records. nd Found Ad rtisements may be found on b: 11 HELP—MEN.
