By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, June 20.—Bank clear- ings again are higher, due, in large part, to the gains at some of the lead- ing Western and Southern centers. ‘The total for the 22 leading cities in the United States for the week ended ‘Wednesday, June 19, as reported by Dun & Bradstreet, Inc., was 85,899 - 502,000, against $5,583,962,000 for the same week of last year, an increase of 5.7 per cent. This contrasted with a gain of 39 per cent for the preceding week. At New York City, clearings were $4,012,- 796,000, an increase of 3.5 per cent over the amount reported last year, while the aggregate for centers outside of New York of $1,886,706,000 was 10.6 per cent higher. Heavy income tax payments swelled bank settlements both this year and last. Not in six weeks have clearings been so high. Only in four other weeks this year has the amount ex- ceeded that for this week, twice early in March and twice in May. The total for the outside centers was in excess of every week back to the first week of January, 1932. With the larger settlements due to income tax payments, clearings this week were in excess of those for the preceding week by $1,122,724,000, whereas for the same two weeks of last year the increase amounted to $984,580,000. The increase was the this week at Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Detroit, Cincin- nati, Baltimore, Atlanta, Louisville, Francisco and Portland, Oreg. Figures at leading centers, showing | increases and decreases compared with those of a year ago, are printed here- with; also daily bank clearings for this year to date: (Totals in thousands.)
