AUTO FINANCING REGISTERS GAINS Sharp Drop in Reposses- sions in Recent Months Also Cheers Industry. By the Associated Press. DETROIT, June 20.—A greater volume of automobile financing and a sharp decline in the number of re- possessions offer another basis for the enthusiasm of motor car manufac- turers over the showing their indus- try has made during the last several months in the recovery movement. Pigures announced recently by the Census Bureau covering four months of this year showed that the value of financing of motor cars had reached $516,979,914, against a tctal of $326,~ 693,326 in the like period of last year. The number of cars involved in- creased from 682,215 in 1934 to 937,- 616 this year. There have been re- , of course, but the propor- tion is far below that of earlier periods during the economic dislocation. There has been some comment in trade circles that the encouraging showing of the industry has been at the expense of profits. The margin of profit, of course, has not been as large during the recovery period. Producers have explained that both materials and labor costs have increased, while thé price of cars has been held down, both for competitive reasons and be- cause the industry has felt the need of expanding the distribution of motor vehicles if a really lasting recovery was to be put under way. The producers reason that the au- tomobile is its own greatest promotion factor. They already have keyed fac- tory activity to consumer demand, re- versing the practice of the predepres- sion era, when retail outlets were ex- pected to keep up with factory allot- ments. Recent surveys of the motor car market tell of a slight tapering off in retail distribution, but in most quarters this has been accepted as merely a temporary halt, with a re- FINANCIAL *xx A—17_ Holders Reject Goodyear Plan for / Kelly Springfield By the Associated Press.
