By the Associated Press. HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, May 1.— With arctic drift floes presenting & menacing barrier to shippinrg, hope was abandoned yesterday for two ves- sels which disappeared in the crushe ing ‘ee flelds. Both were schooners, and they vanished off the south coast of New- foundland. The Alsatian carried 25 men, and the Gloucester boat, Arthur D. Storey, had eight aboard. ‘The steamers Delia and Pullox were in retreat today, slightly damaged, after unsuccessfully trying to cut their way through the Strait of Canso to Montreal. The Pullox, of 1,028 tons, was car- ried onto a ledge and held there until the tide loosened the ice pack and floated her. A few miles away, the Delia fought for hours before escap- ing from an ice jam. In the wake of an icebreaker, the British freighter Titanian crawled toward St. Johns, Newfoundland, leaking after a battle with the ice. Along the coast the incoming ice caused heavy damage to shipping. | Many ships were held in port. !
