Moses, former Repub- Hican Senator from New Hampshire, hazarded the “guess” yesterday that the next presidential nominee of his | party may be a dark horse. Moses is here to gather material for an auto- biography. In nl; interview, he was asked what be thought of Republican prospects for 1936. “I am not at all optimistic,” he responded. “My guess is that the nominee for President will be some one who hasn't been talked about much. Say a man like Steiwer (United States Senator of Oregon).” “Of course, Steiwer's chances de- pend a great deal on what he does next year.” Priest Given Edge. He rated the drawing power of Father Charles E. Coughlin, Detroit’s | radio priest, as “considerably greater” than that of Senator Huey Long. “A man like Father Coughlin,” he sald, “has to be handled very gingerly. I think he is more effective in his National Union for Social Justice cam- paign that Huey is in his share-the- wealth program. His union is getting | more support in New Hampshire than I thought possible. “Of course, Huey has many, many followers. I imagine that if he ran for President on a third-party ticket today he could carry Louisiana, Mis- sissippi, Arkansas and Georgia. “But the thing to remember about & third party is that to be successful it's strength has to be concentrated in the larger States.” TUndecided on Race. “Are you going to run for the Sen- ate again?” Moses was asked, “I don't know,” he smiled. “Right now I am writing the greatest book ever written. DOUGHTON REFUSES GOVERNORSHIP RACE Decides Against Running for North Carolina Office After Talk With Roosevelt. By the Associated Press After talking with the President, the Speaker of the House and the Secretary of State, hardworking 71- year-old “Bob” Doughton has de- cided against seeking the govern- orship of North Carolina. Instead, he will remain in Congress as chairman of the important House Ways and Means Committee, which under the Constitution originates all tax and tariff bills, and which, to the minds of administration leaders, has done a particularly good job under Doughton's _chairmanship. For months Doughton's colleagues had urged him to become a candidate for North Carolina's governship. He felt, however, that he should consult others, . Wrong Addresses Costly. With scarcely any opposition House Democrats yesterday sang the praises of Secretary Ickes—who has been put in charge of making allotments out of the $4,000,000,000 work-relief fund— and voted overwhelmingly to allow him a new $10,000-a-year Undersecre- tary of the Interior. For two weeks there had been talk about how the Secretary should be reminded that Congress does have some power. Representative Wood- rum, Democrat, of Virginia, who has many friends in the House, told news- paper men he was going to fight the attempt to give Ickes a new aide. ‘The flare-up reached such propor- tions that House Democratic leaders declared hands off, fearful of defeat.
