SLOWER PACE § AT STEEL PLANTS Iron Age Reports Decline of One Point in Week to 46 Per Cent Mark. By the Assoclated Pr NEW YORK, May 1.—Reporting current steel production at 46 per cent of capacity, off 1 point from last week, Iron Age in its weekly summary today said “definite trends in steel demand are still lacking.” Pig iron production in April was below that of the previous month, but in contrast with this sign of slackened activity steel scrap prices “are giving 8 demonstration of stability in virtually all markets,” the review asserted. Mill operations showed gains at De- troit, but were off at Chicago, the valleys, the Cleveland-Lorain district and Buffalo. “The flow of steel to the automotive industry has tapered, but the reces- sion has been due to strikes at a Michigan steel mill and at two Chev- rolet plants rather than to any appre- ciable decline in the requirements of motor car makers. “Steel releases from manufacturers | unaffected by labor disputes have thown little change, despite the fact that the peak of this year’s bulge in production has apparently been passed. “Farm implement makers are be- ginning to feel a seasonal falling off in business and stove makers will soon have to curatil, but tractor manufac- | turers are booked in excess of their ability to deliver, with some plants enjoying the best trade in their his-| April pig fron production was 1,664,000 tons, or daily rate of 55470, against 1,770,028, or 57,098 tons daily, in March. Greater stability in scrap prices, the summary said, was based in part upon the recent advance in railroad freight rates and larger export demand in the East. The Iron Age composite on scrap is slightly higher at $1042 a ton. ‘The composites on finished steel and pig iron are unchanged at 2.124 cents a pound and $17.90 a ton, respectively. Motor manufac- turers have turned to new alloy metals of extra strength and durability to meet these new ditions: pressure and heat. Yet motor oils generally have no more oili- ness and film strength now than they had ten years ago. Some oils have less, because over- refining to eliminate carbon and sludge has robbed them of oiliness and film strength. ‘There is one exception—Conoco Germ Pro- cessed Motor Oil. It, too, is free from carbon and sludge troubles, as its users know after millions of trouble-free miles of driving. But more important, Almen and Timken machine tests prove it has more oiliness and 2 to 4 times the film strength of any straight mineral oil! That added oiliness and film strength protect your motor under all conditions. Germ Processing—adding concentrated oily essence to highly-refined oil—gives other valu- able advantages. Because Germ Processed Oil penetrates and combines with metal surfaces, a “Hidden Quart” stays up in your motor and cuts down starting-period wear. Germ Pro- cessed Oil gives longer mileage with greater motor proteetion, as proved by the famous Indianapolis Destruction Test. Say “O.K.—Drain”—fill with Conoco Germ Processed Motor Oil and get full motor protection! CONTINENTAL OIL COMPANY e Esz. 1875 ERM PROCESSED PARATFIN BaSE MOTOR OIL
