By the Associated Press. | Germany and the United States, an ; authoritative source said today, are conducting preliminary negotiations for a new “treaty of friendship and commerce,” to replace one that will end next Qctober 14. Germany has announced her in- tention of terminating the old treaty on that date. The aim in the present talks is to prevent havoc in everyday commercial relations which the the absence of a tregty might cause. Policy Will Be Changed. The pact will mark a wide de- parture from American policy, for it is said that it will not contain the “most-favored-nation” clause. Such a clause is contained in the old treaty. Under it, Germany and the United States agreed to give each other's products as favorable treatment as they accorded the goods of any other nation. The old treaty was proclaimed on October 14. 1925. The German Ambassador, in de- nouncing the treaty last October, said the step was forced by the Reich's eco- romic condition and was the only alternative to violation of the pact. Because of conditions, he said, Ger- many must allocate available foreign exchange to buy from countries which have agreed to make almost equivalent | purchases of German goods. | Must Have Senate 0. K. | The new treaty must be ratified by | the Senate. It has no connection with the reciprocal trade treaties being ne- gotiated with other countries. These do not require Senate action. Germany has made overtures for & reciprocal trade pact (minus the most- favored-nation clause) to be nego- tiated under the New Deal's trade | agreements act, but the Reich’s diplo- matic “feelers” have been coolly re- ceived by officials here. LEESBURG, Va, May l1.—Rock Hill, one of Loudoun's fine homes of the Colonial period, was razed by fire late yesterday afternoon. ‘The flames, fanned by a high wind, had made the old brick structure a furnace by the time the Leesburg Fire Company reached the scene. Today the charred, high brick chimneys and massive walls marked the spot where once stood a manor house built in the 1790s by Alfred Belt. Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Heflin, residing on the property, owned by the estate of Mrs. M. E. Heflin, were attending & funeral at the time the fire started. They returned to find their home in Because of the intense heat, firemen and neighbors were able to save only a little furniture from the home. Two children, left at home by the Heflins, discovered the fire under the roof and spread the alarm.
