CHICAGO STOCK MARKET| 1:n,' on its price to domestic mines of 71.57 cents. The Montreal futures market re- | covered 1 to 1% cents an ounce. In London, silver bullion rose % of & penny to 3411-16 pence, which was | equivalent to 7549 cents in New | York. Some Wall Street monetary ex- perts thought they saw developing a situation in which the giant British equalization would dance—and like it | —while the United States Treasury piped the tune. The administration’s silver-buying program at advancing world prices some quarters in the foreign exchange market believed they perceived a threat to the Indian rupee, and through it to the British pound ster- ling, to which it is “anchored” through officia! exchange control. While the principal backing of the Indian currency unit is holdings of British sterling securities, it is pointed out that the major part of the circu- lating medium, in a country where banks are nearly unknown outside of the few large cities, is silver coin. A further advance In the world price | of silver to $1.06 an ounce or there- abouts, according to most calculations, ! | would put the rupee in the present position of ihe Mexican peso, where it would be profitable to meit it down | for its bullion content. That is calculated on the present exchange value of the pound and the rupee with the dollar. Now if the British official control were to try to depreciate the pound further, these Wall Street experts point out, it would lower the world silver price at which it would become profitable to melt down rupee coins. So they think the American bid- ding up of the price of silver may rep- resent a warning to the British not to try to depreciate the pound further, for if they do, silver can quickly be put to a level which will disrupt the rupee coinage. Recent declines in the pound sterling have had an adverse effect upon American commodity mar- kets and have been s source of con- siderable worry. | ican Ice Co. had & net loss of 3225,084 Avplications solicited for loans on down- lown. centrally located business proverties at 5% D.
