BY RADER WINGET, Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW. YORK, April 30.—Thomas John Watson, who receives the high- | est corporate salary reported to the Securities and Exchange Gommussion, built his earnings by attention to clock-watching and punching holes in cardboard. As president of International Busi- ness Machines Corp, Watson was paid $365358 last year, as reported to the S. E, C., and this year he will be paid $257,000. ‘Watson is credited with building I B. M. to the point where it domi- nates the tabulating-accounting ma- chine market, does business in 78 countries and has failed to increase profits in only three years since 1914. Trade Methods Checked. 1. B. M., among other activities, makes machines which check busi- ness by mechanical clock-watching, the machines timing various opera-. tions, and it has other machines which file the information by punch- ing holes in cards at specific places. Different machines sort the cards and tabulate facts according to the holes. The corporation’s $6,597,362 in net profits last year were ahead of 1933. It was in 1933, 1932 and 1921 that nets were below the previous year. When Watson, now 61 years old, left National Cash Register in 1914 to become head of I. B. M. (then known as Computing-Tabulating-Recording | ’, Ui Auwanssrsr traripsn CRparI Ry #rOTIIETE e O ) does protect — reinforce — your niattress on the sides, enabling the sides to hold “uwp” much longer. He started an engineering depart- ment, he launched a sales campaign and he inaugurated a system of schools for employes. In the years following he has expanded those ac- tivities and branched into new flelds. Works Under Contract. His services are assured by con- tract which now gives him $100,000 a year salary and 5 per cent of the profits after $6 a share has been paid on capital stock. Despite the salary and power in I. B. M, Watson punches a time clock with the rest of the workmen. On his desk is a card with “think” in capital letters, and such slogans as “Time lost is gone forever” are familiar in the main plants in Endi- cott, N. Y.; Dayton, Ohio; Rochester, N. Y., and Washington, where work- men’s activities are timed and tabula- ted minutely on I, B. M. machines. Although Watson raises cattle and horses on his farm in New Jersey near his Short MMis home, his real hobby, his associates say, is foreign trade. FOREIGN MARKETS. By the Associated Press. The general trend of wholesale commodity prices was upward in' the week ended April 27, according to the index of the National Fertilizer Association. This index, based on the 1926-28 average as 100, advanced to 78.3 from 78.2 in the preceding week. A month ago the index was 772 and & year ago, 70.8. Five of the component groups of the index moved upward last week and two declined. In every case the fluctuations were relatively small. The advance in the foods group car- ried it to the highest level which has been reached in the recovery period. The trend of foodstuff prices, how- ever, was mixed last week, with four commodities in the group advancing and five declining. The rise in the textiles group was due entirely to higher cotton prices; the only other change in this group was a slight decline in silk prices. The sharp advance in silver prices | was reflected in the metals group index, although the rise in the group | was due also in part to higher quota- | tions for lead and tin. The grains, feeds and live stock | group declined slightly, although seven | items advanced and six declined. | ‘The fats and oils group index again | declined, but there was no general downward movement in the com- modities in this group. The fertilizer materials index re- mained unchanged, a decline in cot- | tonseed meal prices counterbalancing & rise in ground bone. 54 Twenty-seven commodities ad- vanced last week and 18 declined; in the preceding week there were 33 ad- vances and 26 declines; in the second preceding week there were 33 ad- vances and 16 declines.
