HE tiny short-wave receiver, | and the specially conszructed‘ 8-watt transmitter, which Capt. Albert W. Stevens and Capl.| Orville A. Anderson will carry with them when they attempt an- other invasion of the stratosphere early in .June, have' been completed and will be installed in the dowmetal gondola sometime this week. Capts. Stevens and Anderson will utilize the miniature broadcasting equipment to give N. B. C. listeners a description of the world’s envelope and report progress of their flight. | Robert M. Morris, N. B. C. de- velopment engineer, accompanied the stratosphere equipment to Dayton, Ohio, where he will supervise its in- stallation in the gondola preparatory to its removal to Strato-Bowl, near Rapid City, S. Dak. ‘The 40-pound transmitter, little larger than the average miniature home receiving set, is almost identi- cal in construction with the one util- ized by Capt. Stevens and Maj. Wil- liam Kepner in the 1934 flight. A different type of short-wave re- ceiver, however, will- be used during the 1835 stratosphere flight. A new, single-control, superheterodyne set, weighing only 15 pounds, will be in- | stalled in the gondola. The new re- ceiver is about 10 times more sen- sitive than the former dual-control sets. Improvements also have been made in the ground transmitter, which is being installed at the rim of the bowl above the strato-camp. The new crystal control transmitter assures improved frequency stability and quality of voice transmission. * Xk X X LEM McCarthy, veteran racing authority and commentator, will describe the forty-third running of the Preakness at Pimlico, during & half-hour breadcast over an N.
