April 23.—Bond trad- ing today was marked by general steadiness in most sections as Federal obligations set the pace, with gains throughout the list. Rail issues were particularly firm, with gains predominant in both medium-priced and low-yield brackets. While industrials, were generally higher, utilities failed to score in ail sections. Southern Pacific 418 of 1968 were up 1% at 63%. Columbia Gas & Electric stood out among the utili- ties with a run-up of 1% to 87%. Although five commodities in the foods group advanced and only three declined, the group index moved downward, largely the result of lower prices for eggs and milk, items which are relatively heavily weighted. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, April 23.—The world price of bar silver today shot up close to the price which the United States ‘Treasury is paying American mines for new metal, This led to expectations in Wall street that another step-up in the Treasury's price might be announced shortly. ‘The price for foreign bar silver fof eommercm nse was fixed in New York at 697 cents, up 2% cents from yes- terday. This wes the highest price in 10 years and compared with the Treas- ury’s price fixed April 11 of 71.11 cents. It was recalled in Wall street silver circles that at that time, Sen- ator Pittman of Nevada, one of the leaders in developing the administra- tion’s silver program, had predicted that the world price would be lifted in orderly fashion to $1.29 an ounce, the old statutory coinage price in the the United States. The rise in New York today was pre- ceded by a sharp advance in London on the resumption of dealings there after the Easter holidays. On the | basis of the early rate for sterling ex- change, the London price was equiva- lent to 70.75 cents, or somewhat above the price fixed later in New York. Silver futures in Montreal ran up sharply, but had reacted somewhat be- fore the New York price was fixed. The Treasury's latest advance in its price to American mines came after the world price had risen close to it, and silver circles expect the Treasury will continue to keep that price some- what above the world price. The Treas- ury’s advance to 71.11 cents was from a price of 64.64 cents which had been fixed in December of 1933. ‘While it took the world price & long time to get up to the 64.64-cent level, the situation in world markets recently became “tight"—that is, floating sup- plies have been largely absorbed by the Treasury buying program, so that the price has gone up easily of late. Today’s price of 69% compares with 55 cents at the beginning of the year, cents DIVIDENDS ANNOUNCED NEW YORK. April 23 —Dividends Ge- clared iprepared by the Standard Statis- ties Corp.)
