A—-12 SETTLE DEFENDS GRAVELLY POINT Planning Commission Sec- retary Answers Opponents of Airport Site. Vigorous defense of the Graveily Point airport site for Washington was made yesterday by Thomas S. Settle, secretary of the National Capital Park and Planning Commission, in a letter to members of the commission. Settle took sharp issue with the Park and Playgrounds Subcommittee of _the House District Committee in its find- ings against Gravelly Point. It was learned at the same time the full House District Committee proba- bly will consider the subcommittee report against Gravelly Point, and its recommendation that a commission be appointed to select another site, at the regular committee meeting ‘Wednesday morning. In his letter, Settle said: “It is dif- ficuit to see how the committee, with the evidence before it, could have reached the conclusions set forth in its report.” The findings of the sub- committee, Settle said, “appear to be diametrically opposed to the grave preponderance of testimony given.” Settle cited specific arguments of the subcommittee against Gravelly Point and parallel testimony submitted during the hearings in direct con- tradiction of the arguments. He said the committee’s argument against Gravelly Point, on account of the time required for its development, was Te- futed by testimony of Maj. Brehon B. Somervell, assistant to the chief of Army engineers, and Maj. Robert W. Crawford, local Army engineer. Arguments that the amount of money needed is undetermined are met by definite estimates of $2,300,000 o $2,500,000 for a 266-acre unit, Set- tle said. Arguments that made land would prove unsatisfactory are countered by much testimony, Settle said. He also cited testimony in refutation of the subcommittee's argu- ment that close proximity of Gravelly Point to Bolling Field presents an in- surmountable obstacle. He submitted a long list of arguments in favor of Gravelly Point by more than a score of witnesses. | Settle closed by pointing out that at its last meeting the Park and| Planning Commission reiterated its stand in favor of Graveily Point.
