B—6 ARLINEPONEES FRECTRADIO BASE Complete Station at Hono- lulu in Three Days—Select Landing Site. BY JUNIUS B. WOOD. By Radio to The Star. ABOARD S. 5. NORTH HAVEN, April 9.—After clearing Honolulu Harbor Sunday night, the North Haven began the long trek across the Pacific to establish bases for the Pan- American Airways’ clipper plane serv- ice to connect the United States and Asia. Until it reaches Guam, some time toward the end of May, the expedi- tion will be aut off from the rest of the world, except for radio and cable eommunication, while at the lone- some islands of Midway and Wake. Erect Radio Station. During the three days in Honolulu, the company's engineers and me- chanics erected and put into opera- | tion a radio station—a requirement that normally would take as many | weeks or more. This was due partly | to enthusiastic Hawaiian co-operation. Other company engineers inspected the best available sites near Honolulu for plane landing on the opposite side of Oahu Island from Mokaput Point, | where the radio station is located in | the shadow of the extinct Oloupau crater. i The first post-hole dug brought up | human bones and a skull split by a | battle ax. CHICAGO, April 9.—Anybody look- ing for a good bodyguard might do well to get into touch with a “triple- threat” girl—Miss Helen Fortney, who professes to be able to shoot, punch or grapple with equal ferocity. | For Helen, who is 20 years old, stands 5 feet 5 inches high, and weighs 138, has come to the big city of Chi- cago from Wisconsin to pursue her career as a bodyguard, determined to carry on the Napoleonic maxim that “attack is the best defense.” After being graduated from high | #chool she tried a job as a waitress, but in her spare time began getting into | condition for her intended career by | wrestling, boxing, rowing, putting the | #hot and tramping through the woods with a shotgun. | “The only kind of a gun I haven't tried yet,” she said, “is a machine gun, and so far I haven't needed one. Once, when I was 12 years old I knocked out | & boy 18 years old. When I let him have it he hit the ground so hard he | rolled all the way down the hill from | where we were standing.” | W.D.
