Institute Contest Tonight. ‘The prize speaking contest of Wash- ington Chapter, American Institute of Banking, takes place this evening in the chapter room in the Bond Build- ing. ‘The honors sought are the Bank Presidents Trophy and the opportunity to represent the chapter in divisional contests from which the contestants for the national convention honors | are selected. The judges for tonight's contest will be Raymond B. Dickey. dean of the institute faculty; Thomas J. Groom, vice president and cashier of the Bank of Commerce & Savings and secretary | of the District Bankers' Association, | and Dr. Ralph D. Kennedy, assistant | professor of economics at George Washington University. The annual dinner of the Ticker Club of Washington is set for this evening at the Columbia Country Club, starting at 8 o'clock. Thomas W. Brahany, the retiring president, will be the host. The number of accep- tances to the invitations indicates a large attendance of brokers who are connected with the various Washing- ton offices of New York Stock Ex- change houses. Washington Gas Bonds Climb. ‘Washington Gas 5s, 1960, were very strong and higher on the Washington Stock Exchange today. They opened at 1151 and closed at 115';. City & Suburban Railway 5s moved at 84, up from 811; Capital ‘I‘nctlon 5s were out again today, $10,000 and $1,000 selling at 99%, unchanged from the last sale ‘The bonds closed with 99' bid and 993, asked. In the stock division Potomac Elec- tric Power 6 per cent preferred was strong at 111, while the corpora- tion’s 51, per cent preferred moved at 1151 on a small sale. Carpel Corp. stock came out on the board today for the first time in many weeks. It sold for 16'4, ex-dividend, for 15 shares. The market closed witn 100 shares of Real Estate Mortgage & Guaranty preferred selling at 314. Heard in Financial District. J Nomination of Charles R. Gay as the next president of the New York 8tock Exchange ends many lively dis- cussions in Washington brokerage of- fices over the contest.
