NA. 2184 BROKERS CHEERED BY GAY'S SPEECH Seat Price Raised $1,000 Soon After Nomination Is Announced. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 9.—'Let's get going with Gay” is the slogan adopted by a large group of Wall Streeters, who hailed the nomination Monday of | Charles R. Gay for presidency of the New York Stock Exchange. The nom- ination is tantamount to election. The original “Gay men” considered it an omen that, a few minutes after the nomination was announced, membership should be sold at $70,000, 8 $1,000 advance over the previous | seat sale. They also pointed out umw Mr. Gay is a believer in preparedness, | citing the fact that he moved from 111 | Broadway to 1 Wall street, which is Just back of the New York Stock Exchange, only last week. When Mr. Gay moved he took with him, of course, the venerable firm of Whitehouse & Co., of which he is senior partner. When Mr. Gay is compelled by official duties to be ab- sent from the floor his place will be | taken by his son, William C. Gay, Princeton, 1927, who already is con- sidered a veteran broker in point of experience. Nomination of Mr. Gay, if one may judge by Wall Street commant, meeLSv with approval. Certainly his nccept- ance speech was well regarded. | “I am convinced that we are on| the eve of better times, that business men are anxious to go ahead,” said Mr, Gay. “As conditions change for the beuer. they will undoubtedly be reflected in more active markets. Stock exchanges do not make busi ness, but they do indicate the tude of the Nation's business me: (Copyright, 1935.)
