The wholesale commodity price in- dex of the Natlonal Fertilizer Asso- clation again advanced last week, rising to 77.7 per cent of the 1926- 1928 average, compared with 77.2 in the preceding week, 77.9 a month ‘ago and 7L1 a year ago. The rise in the index last week was largely due to advances in foods and agricultural products; the princi- pal advances occurred in the foods, grains, feeds and live stock and fats and oils groups. The only otber group to advance was metals, which showed a very slight increase. Three groups, fuel, textiles and building materials, declined during the week, but in each case the recession was slight. The foods group led in the number of advances, with nine items in this group moving upward and three de- clining. Eggs showed a contra-sea- sonal rise and increases also occurred in sugar, ham, flour and potatoes. Eight commodities in the grains, feeds and live stock group advanced and six declined; grains and live stock were generally higher, while % hay and feedstuffs were lower. The fats and oils group again ad- | vanced last week, rising to 82.8 from |79.5 in the preceding week, with the rise due to higher prices for butter and coconut oil. Higher prices for tin and silver resulted in a slight advance in the metals group. Cotton prices were slightly higher during the week, but the advance was more than offset by lower prices for cotton goods and wool. Twenty-five commodities advanced last week and 23 declined; in the pre- ceding week there were 33 advances and 21 declines; in the second pre- ceding week ' there were 15 advances and 32 declines. —_— STEEL SCRAP REDUCED AGAIN AT PITTSBURGH By the Associated Press. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 9.—The buying power of this country today is about | 28 per cent greater than a year ago ! and about 53 per cent greater than | 3n¢ two years ago, but this ability to spend is differently distributed than | 0 it was in 1934 and 1933. The agricultural States again record the largest increases in spendable income, if New York, California and | Ohio be excepted, though the severe drought of last Summer and dry weather this year are adversely af- fecting the ability to buy in certain Western and Southwestern States. The leading States, in point of estimated gains in dollar buying power over 1933, are: New York, California, Ohio, Illinols, Texas, Michigan, Minnesota, Indiana, Con- necticut, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Missourl, Georgia, | Iowa and Maryland. The list show- ing gains over 1932 has this ranking: New York, Illinois, California, Penn- sylvania, Ohio, Texas, Michigan, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Iowa, Min- | nesota, India New Jersey, North | Carolina, Missouri and Georgia. The advent of repeal, the better | tobacco trade and higher prices paid | growers, the cotton, corn and hog processing programs; the brightened | prospects for dairying and its prod- uces and stimulation in the auto- | mobile industries are quite evldem] from a study of these income sta- tistics. The manner in which the drought hit certain sections is also | observable. | A study of these spendable income estimates by States reveals that Texas | last year forged ahead of Michigan. ' Connecticut and North Carolina out- distanced Washington. Oklahoma, Maryland and Georgia pushed ahead of Kansas. Kentucky and Tennessee, thanks to repeal and tobacco, moved up in front of Virginia and Nebraska.
