DIONNE GUARDS MOVE IN HOSPITAL Quintuplets, Now 10 Months 0Old, Show Rapid Development. By the Assoclated Press. CALLANDER, Ontario, March 28.— Armed police moved into -the Dafoe Hospital today to guard the famous Dionne quintuplets against possible kidnaping. Constables W. McCord and W. Noyes of the Ontario police will watch over the famous children who are 10 months old today, sleeping and eating in the hospital attic. ‘The move, the only departure from the hospital's orderly routine on the infants’ birthday, indicated the On- tario government still places credence in rumors of a plot to spirit the children out of the control of provin- cial authorities into the United States. Under New Guardianship. | It was one of the first offictal acts | under the new guardianship set-up formally approved yesterday when Lieut. Gov. H. A. Bruce signed an act of the Legislature making the | children “special wards of his majesty | the King." i Dr. A. R. Dafoe, the babies' physi- eian sirice birth. will continue to act| only as “medical guardian.” He de- clared his young charges completed their first 10 months of life in the best health they ever have experienced. Gaining weight steadily, the sun- tanned, blue-eyed girls are pictures of health. Dr. Dafoe said they have definitely overcome the handicap of premature birth. Rapidly Developing. As becomes young ladies moving out of babyhood, they are rapidly getting away from bottles, adopting spoons and glasses for carrying food to little red mouths that so far hold only two | teeth, the tiny white spots that show above the gums of Yvonne an Annette. ‘The others still are toothless. The babies now spend their mornings | on the uncovered veranda looking out | over fields still deep in snmow. When roads are opened up and tourists flock to the district, they will find them taking their daily outing in a solarium. I} THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, Singer Plays Dual Role Miss Galli-Campi, Bal Masque Artist, Very Much a Woman Off Stage. BY GEORGE HURD. EWSPAPER women of Wash- ington will be given an oppor- tunity to meet one of the great personalities of the operatic stage when Miss Galli-Campi, coloratura soprano, ap- pears in an interesting program at the Bal Masque to be held by the Newspaper Women's Club at the Wil- lard Hotel Saturday night. To say that Miss Gaii-Campi is extremely beautiful might be con- sidered an exaggeration—but to say that she has all the attributes of a beautiful woman—charm, personality, health and love of Mving—certainly could not be an overstatement. What strikes one most forcibly while talking to this acclaimed one is the diversification of the -human ego —how in one, or many, it can be 80 greatly expanded under the white light of applause, while in others it pursues the even tenor of its way, leaving the subject unspoiled, unaf- fected and charming. When listening to this successor to Jenny Lind, Patti, Melba, Tetrazzini and othérs of the bell-like voices one gets the impression of a mechanical being far beyond the reach of ordi- nary mortals. Her force and vehe- mence of voice so overshadows the woman that che becomes. rather, the robin outside the window or the thrush in the high willow. ‘When sitting opposite her on a sit- TELEPHONE ® ADAY BUYS A N EW ELECTRIG ting room divan she soon gives the impression of the American woman, with her everyday cares and worries, with her innate love of home and thoughts of home folk, with her desire | to be the gracious hostess in her | If Your Dentist Hurts You Try DR. In other words, Miss Galli-Campi mmamm attributes to swimming her ability to sustain for such long pgriod the high notes in coloratura range on one breath. 8She explains it this way: “With seven hungry, very mu- sical children to be fed from the meager compensation of my father, & clergyman, I realized at the age of 12 that I would have to earn some money if I was to continue my musical edu- cation, 50 I became a life saver. Swim- ming, I believe, is one of the most effective diaphragm-developing activi- ties in which one could indulge, espe- cially under-water swimming, For this it is necessary to breathe deeply before submerging and then this breath must be used sparingly. In other words, it results in breath control.” Miss Galli-Campi is American-born of Italian and German parentage. She can trace her lineage as far back as 400 AD. to an enterprising clan known as the of hrd.ll Italy. It was & branch of flfll clan that migrated to Germany about 700 A.D. snd married into the family of the blind King George of Hanover— the Von Usslars. But she would rather talk about happenings of the present than those things which might give her a claim to royalty. She was invited to sing at the Bal Masque following an appearance at| ' the White House March 12, when she delighted the presidential family with her distinctive voice and charming personality. Mrs. Roosevelt and the wives of cabinet members will be among those who will attend the Bal Masque to h‘en‘x;t Miss Galli-Campi Saturday night.
