DETROIT, March 28—If unfilled orders on hand may be used as a dependable gauge of factory activity in the immediate future, the motor car industry’s assembly lines will con- tinue at the present high level of pro- duction for many weeks to come. Combined with this demand from dealers is an already well-started cam- paign to prolong the selling season until well into the Summer, despite | the fact that the 1935 merchandising | period should be shorter than any of the last several years because of the change in plans for new-model intro- duction. One of the most hopeful signs for prolongation of this high-level activity in the plants is seen in the steady upward frend of volume output by leading low-price car manufacturers. Especially significant in this con- nection is the announcement by Chev- rolet that it has pushed its daily pro- duction mark up to more than 5,000 units a day and that it is counting upon the output of a new assembly plant at Baltimore to add materially to the daily volume. Chevrolet introduced its new models on January 5, but get under way slowly and maintained a modest volume of production until a fortnight ago, when it began creeping up on the Ford high-level mark. Ford has been producing at the rate of 6,000 units a day. The pro- duction and distribution race between Ford and Chevrolet has been one of the most interesting aspects of the low-priced field activity in the in- dustry. This has been given added attention this year because Ford, which for most of the last decade has been running second to Chevrolet, got away to a marked lead during the early weeks of the present year. ‘The spurt by Chevrolet, however, indicates another keen dispute for leadership between the two companies this year. Both are among the producers reporting large blocks of un- filled orders. Most of the sales directors are content to accept the bulk of current retail demand as continuance of a released backlog that started to come into the market last year. They be- lieve, too. that the dealer meetings now being held in the different ules regions will bring out more of this de- mand, well into the Summer months. NEW YORK, March 28.—The Chi- cage, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad anhounced today that pay- | ment of a $900,000 equipment trust certificate maturity due April 1 would be deferred pending the completion of a plan to reorganize the road's capital structure. C. prior (o July 1 the matter of an additional ican o/ ! enable it to meet its requirements sub~) sequent fo June 30, “In view of the uncertainties of the railroad situation and of the earnings of the company the directors have de- cided no further loan should be sought from the R.
