COMPLETE §' SOLDIER FREED Coroner’s Jury Exonerates Justifiable homicide was the verdict returied yesterday by a coroner’s jury inquiring into the shooting of John H. Gully, 31, by Phillip A. Zier, 16. THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, Gully, & soldier attached to Fort Myer, Va., was killed instantly Wednesday night when Zier shot him with a .22- calibre rifie. Gully was visiting Mrs. Pauline V. Havener, sister of Zier, at 3912 K street when the shooting occurred. Zier told the jury yesterday that Gully had threatened on numerous occasions to kill his sister and that he had beaten her frequently. On the night of the shooting, he said, the two had become engaged in an argu- ment and when Gully tried to choke the girl she called for help. Zier responded with the gun and the shoot- ing followed. “My sister called ‘Phillip,"” Zier told the jury. “I could see that John had his hands on my sister’s throat, choking her, and I went over to the wall, got the gun, took one step around the table and fired & shot.” Mrs. Havener told the jury she had “kept company” with Gully for about six months prior to December 18, when she had broken off with him, but that he had continued to come to her home as an occasional visitor. | } ; @ongressl.onal ‘ I O)]asln[ngfon' gfi;hm'c ‘ @emetery Single Sites—Family Plots Office 1801 F St. S.E. Hearings were concluded yesterday before a subcommittee of the House Labor Committee, of which Repre- sentative Griswold, Democrat, of In- diana is chairman, on the Randolph bill, which would permit the building of periodical stands to be operated in Government buildings by blind per- sons. Labor representatives were the chief witnesses at the hearing. It was estimated that between 1,200 and 1,500 blind persons could be taken off relief rolls and made self-support- ing if this bill is approved by Con- gress. The measure has the support of Lions Clubs throughout the coun- try. Administration would be placed in the Bureau of Education, Interior Department.
