B—12 SOUTHWEST CROPS HEAVILY PLAGUED Dust Storms Follow Killing Freeze in Several States and Bugs Play Havoc. By the Associated Press. KANSAS CITY, March 7.—0ld mother nature, who didn't do right by the Southwestern farmers last Summer, still has a long ways to go to make amends for the drought. She had no more than begun to make reparations for the prolonged dry spell of 1934 in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas than she brought out a killing freeze or two and unleashed a series of soil-lifting dust storms. The ravages of the old lady’s wrath become more defined in moving from East to West in the section. Bugs Missouri Worry. In Missouri, prospects for Winter wheat and barley are reported by crop experts to be generally good, with the greatest threat lying in chinch bugs and the lack of subsoil moisture. The permanent pasture outlook is _the darkest in the State’s history. This, coupled with prospects of a light strawberry crop, is bad news for strawberry - and - cream fans. The Ozark peach crop was hard hit by & freeze. The condition of the wheat crop in Kansas—the one-time bread basket of the Nation—is described by F. K. Reed, Federal agricultural statistician, to be fair in central and parts of Northeastern Kansas, “but in the West where the drought never has been broken it is as bad or worse, if possible, than a year ago.” ‘Wheat, which managed to survive in that part of the State, is reported by S. D. Flora, Federal meteorolo- gist, to have been serious damaged by strong winds and dust. Most of the State, with the exception of the west and north central portions, is fairly well supplied with moisture to start the growing season. A survey by A. R. Storms Earlier Than Usual. “Dust storms came much earlier than usual and they have damaged crops, especially in the Panhandle, the Western country and, to some extent, in the Southwest,” said Duncan. “The storms got the land before the crops had taken root.” Texas wheat is classed as “fair” by J. E. McDonald, State commissioner of agriculture. Winter oats over much of Northern Texas was killed by a freeze and to date between 40 and 50 per cent has been replanted. HIGH COURT SALARY MEASURE IS BEATEN House Rejects Bill Allowing Re- tirement at 70 on Full $20,000 Pay. By the Associated Press. The Sumners bill, seeking to give Supreme Court justices the option of retiring on full $20,000 salary instead of resigning at the age of 70 after serving 10 years, was defeated in the House yesterday by a vote of 207 to 144. In debate, preceding the vote, Rep- DEALERS’ resentative Sumners, Democrat, high bench was one of the objectives of his measure, but he did say it was to make the justices feel more free to step down when they had aged. Introduction of the measure some weeks ago evoked discussion as to whether some of the five justices cligible for retirement might desire to do so under the more favorable pro- posed law. The bill also sought to make the justices subject to voluntary casual service out on the circuits at the call of the chief justice. At present a justice may resign—as did the late Justice Holmes—but with his salary thereafter subject to con- gressional alteration, as was the case with Holmes under the economy act.
