By the Associated Press. Both American exports and imports were shown by Department of Com- merce figures today to have increased in January over December. Exports were 3 per cent higher in January. It was said usually there 15 a decline of 4 per cent between the two months. Imports, which had fallen off more than seasonally in December, ad- vanced 26 per cent. The excess of exports over imports, the so-called favorable trade balance, totaled $9,217,000 in January in com- parison with $38,421,000 in December and $36,515,000 in January, 1934. Exports were valued at $176,223,000 in January, compared with $170,673,- 000 in December and $172,220,000 in January, 1934. Imports aggregated $167,006,000 in comparison with $132,252,000 in De- cember and $135,706,000 in January, 1934. The export gain during January resulted largely from an inerease in shipments of automobiles and leaf to- | bacco, although larger exports of lubricating oil, gasoline, automobile tires, fur skins and lard added to the | total. “In the comparison of the statistics for January, 1935, with those for the same month of 1934,” the Commerce Department said, “there appears further evidence of the trend toward | expansion in exports of manufactured | articles and shrinkage in exports of | agricultural products. “Total finished manufactured ex- ports, valued at $74,297,000 in January, | 1935, were 42.8 per cent of the total export trade this year, whereas, a year | ago the corresponding percentage was 36.2 per cent.” A large proportion of commodities shared in the expansion in import | trade during January. Poodstuff im- ports increased most, although im- | ports of many other commodities in- creased substantially. Total exports for the seven months 1934. were $958,213,000, $993,173,000. NEW YORK, March 7.—Many leaders in the financtal district are discussing some interesting facts brought out by the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey in a publication direct- ing attention to the Ra; bill, which would regulate all public utility holding companies, and eventually abolish them, and separate ofl from its twin, natural gas. “The corporation is not something apart from the average man,” the oil company observes. “The people who own its stocks and bonds cannot be separated from those who have only secondary interest in such securities. “Nearly everybody has a stake in a corporation; if not directly, then in- directly, because provident pcople carry insurance, and insurance companies have funds invested in corporations. Charitable agencies depend to a large extent upon dividends and interest payments from securities given them. “The moral is that the proper test for corporation legislation should be the same as for other proposals affect- ing the public interest. Is it good legislation in itself, uninfluenced by a wish to help one group at the expense of another?” (Copyright. 1935.) NET DEMAND DEPOSITS CLIMB TO NEW PEAK By the Associated Press.
