THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, CURBISHESITANT N- Y. CURB MARKET AS VOLUME LAGS Main Groups Contribute Minor Gains—Few Spe- cialties Climb. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, March 7.—The Curb market moved at a slow pace today and prices showed no uniform direc- tion. Virtually all of the main groups | contributed some minor gains, and in the specialty division a few ad- vances of a point or better were recorded. American Cyanamid B, American Gas & Electric, Distillers Corp.-Sea- grams, Greyhound, Hiram Walker, International Petroleum, Lake Shore Mines, Pioneer Gold, Sherwin-Wil- liams and Swift & Co. edged up fractionally in the early trading and were firm near the best levels in the fourth hour. Montreal Light, Heat & Power and New York & Honduras Rosario were transferred in small blocks a point or more below the previous transactions. BITUMINOUS OUTPUT GAINS DURING WEEK The National Coal Association, from incomplete car-loading reports from the railroads, estimates bitumi- nous coal production in the United States for the week ended March 2 as approximately 8,730,000 net tons. Production for the corresponding week: 1934, 8,273,000 tons; 1933, 6,415,000 tons. The report of the Bureau of Mines shows production of 8,515,000 tons for the week ended February 16 and 8,316,000 for the week ended Febru- ary 23. BONDS ON THE CURB VARKET. DOMESTIC BONDS. High. NEW YORK, March 7.—Wall Street | financial quarters displayed strong , |Signs of doubt today that a deprecia- tion race between the English pound and the American dollar was in the 2 |offing Although a White House statement yesterday led to the belief that no further devaluation of the dollar was imminent, financial commentators marshaled othier evidence to support their case. Mount Prod From the Ametican’ standpoint, it |} was felt that the huge Federal Treas- ury refinancing in the fmmediate -fu- ture would preclude a change in the gold content of the dollar for fear that the action might upset the Treas- ury program. Then, too, it was pointed out that President Roosevelt can cut the dol- lar only from its present 59.06 per % | cent of its former gold content to 50 per cent, a margin of devaluation which some quarters feel is more effec- tive as a threat than as an actuality. From the British standpoint that margin of devaluation remains as a Yankee trading point should English and American statesmen embark on a currency stabilization program. A fairly widespread opinion is that British interests favor allowing the pound to swing in the foreign exchange market until such time as it reaches what the English term a natural level. Estimates in this country place that natural level at between $4.20 and $4.70. At the same time, some sections of the Wall Street community feel cer- tain the British are too sophisticated 7’* |in a financial way to harbor the belief Y St EG 4} zS 0. Some British economists have re- called that the purchasing power of the pound within Britain has changed little and that variations of the pound in terms of other currencies have had slight effect on the domestic market. On the other hand, American finan- cial authorities are said by some to take the same attitude toward the position of the United States on the devaluation question. = INVESTMENT TRUSTS NEW YORK.
