American and- C UPTURN BROADENS = |AT STEEL PLANTS Production Climbs 32 More Points to 441, Per Cent Mark. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, January 9.—"Another sharp gain in steel production agg a further advance in scrap prices have | given the iron and steel market a buoyancy that it has lacked since the first half of 1934," says the Iron Age today. “Ingot output has risen 3!2 points to 44% per cent of capacity, & rate 1 the third week in February. Scrap. as| measured by the Iron Age cnmpolne‘ for heavy melting steel, has been lifted from $11.75 to $12.33 a ton, its highest level since April, 1934, “Although the accelerating pace of automobile production accounts in large part for the current expansion | of steel mill operations, the farm equipment industry continues to take more steel, tin plate specifications have improved, and sizable inquiries from the railroads have hbrightened the prospects for more active demand Xar‘ heavier rolled products. Labor Troubles Feared. “The only cloud on the horizon, and one which has grown more threaten- ing during the last week, is the dis- turbing outlook in industrial relations. | “Fear of labor difficulties also hangs over the automoblle industry. The most conservative estimates place | dian production | for this year at 3,300,000 cars, or | 275,000 a month. Since operations are | customarily confined to about 10| months, output during the active period should average well over 300, 000 a month. That figure will probably | not be attained in the current month, but tentative scehdules for February call for close to 380,000 units “Heavier releases from can makers | have raised tin plate output to 45 per cent of capacity, or 10 points above holiday schedules. Rail Inquiries Made. “Rail and fastening inquiries now before the industry or in early pros-, pect total 136,000 tons. Included are 44,000 tons for the Norfolk & Western, 19,000 tons for the Burlington. 51,000 tons for a larger Southern system. 20,000 tons for an Eastern road and 2,000 tons for a New York subway “The New York Central has taken bids or is about to take tenders on Electric Power Output Mounts Further in Week By the Associated Press.
