DETROIT, December 17.—The con- fident prediction that “we haven’t seen any real wages yet” was voiced from the Ford Motor Co. today coincident with the opening of private confer- ences by President Roosevelt's three- man board of inquory into automobile labor's demands for a shorter work ‘week and an annual wage minimum. The Roosevelt board, functioning under the N. R. A. and headed by Leon Henderson, closed two days of open hearings Sunday night. During the hearings the board heard major Made of only the 217b. Five-Day Week Studied. ‘The private conferences of Hender- son and his aides today are concerned Wwith the basic demands of labor for a five-day week of 30 hours and a guar- anteed yearly salary ranging from $1400 to $2,500 for production line men. The Ford view on wages was spoken last night by William J. Cameron, a Ford official, in a broadcast. He said that “just wages” would prove a better stimuant to industrial peace than “such paternalistic offerings as Christ- mas turkeys, picnics and company bath houses.” 5 Pointing out that philanthropists often study the Ford Motor Co., “in the belief that it is an outstanding example of paternalism in industry,” Cameron_declared that “it was con- trary to Ford principle to exercise any form of paternalism over our men.” “There is a perilous propensity in human nature to manage other peo- ple’s lives, which is the beginning of tyranny,” he said. “But the worst of it is that if you label it ‘philanthropy’ !lgfll be applauded.” ameron said Ford still believed in his theory of high wages and quoted him as saying: “°T believe in them more than ever. We haven't seen any Teal wages yet.'” Fluctuation Cause Given, As concerns the demand of labor as presented to the Roosevelt Board of Inquiry, the American Federation of Labor, the Associated Automobile Workers of America, the International Union of Machinists and other labor groups have described to them as basic demands for the industry. Seasonal fluctuations in the motor car field, the problem the N. R. A. rep- resentatives said they hoped to relieve before the automobile code expired in February, were blamed on the follow- ing six factors by Dennison: Disorgination of employes: deter- mination of manufacturers to main- tain a surplus of labor; yearly influx of new workers from trade schools; simultaneous changes of models by all companies; speed-up systems and gen- eral industrial chaos.
