By the Associated Press. CLEVELAND, Ohio, December 17.— Iron and steel producers are keying production schedules to a higher level than at any time since June, the magazine Steel says. The increase is not only to meet current requirements, but also in prep- aration for several months of contin- ued improvement, it is pointed out by the publication. A 3%-point rise, to 332 per cent, in steel-works operations last week was accompanied by a substantial increase in construction, especially by the au- tomobile industry, with a heavier de- mand for pig iron and coke and a sharp advance in scrap prices. “Specifications from automobile manufacturers last week were mainly responsible for lifting sheet mill pro- duction to an average of 42 per cent. some Northern Ohio mills operating t 60 per cent,” the magazine say: “Motor car output rose to 25,000 from 19,000 the preceding week. Some of the new models feature all-steel ‘tur- ret’ wm and molybdenum stec springs.” The automotive indsutry’s demand was reinforced by demands from ag- ricultural implement manufacturers. whose production is at the highest point in three years. Makers of house- hold utilities called for larger commit- ments and railroad purchases gained. says the publication. Miscellaneous fron and steel bookings so far this month are 50 per cent over the same period in November. A strong undertone continues in the scrap market. Steel's composite is up 21 cents to $11.12, the highest since the second week of May. Dealers and exporters are bidding against consum- ers in some districts. The magazine says it is reported Japan has pur- chased nine vessels on the Pacific Coast for scrap. NEW YORK, December 17 (#)— Continuing the rise of the last sev- eral weeks, steel operations for the current week were esimated by the American Iron and Steel Institute at 34.6 per cent, which marks the high- est point since last Summer. In the previous week the indicated rate was 32.7 per cent. It was 276 per cent a month ago and 342 per cent a year ago. The gain over las week was 1.9 points or 5.8 per cent Internationally Famous for Nearly a Century (Since 1858.) 1107 Connecticut Aven: ENTERPRISE SERIAL BUILDING ASSOCIATION 7th St. & Indiana Ave. N.W.
