HOME TIES Life Was a Monstrous Compulsion; His Family, Bondage; John Envied Sidney’s Gay. Freedom. BY INEZ JENKINS, USINESS, or the lack of business, was becoming more and more irksome to the junior partner of Griffin & Son, attorneys at law. John, jr., sighed as he mentally re- viewed the day’s work, sfipped into his Winter over- coat and stepped outside, locking the office door for the night. He felt over- come by a sense of defeat. Bills, bills, always bills. Sud- denly life seemed & monstrous com- pulsion, his wife and children a form of bondage. A drizzling rain was falling. He turned his coat collar up about his neck. The drabness of the late after- noon penetrated the very depth of his being. His thoughts grew in their perplexity until they had driven the last small measure of endurance from him. He'd not go home. He'd slip off to Carmel by the sea and visit Sidney, his artist friend who kept a little apartment in that gay colony of wor- shipers of freedom and art. Even the sidewalks with their colored cement and queer modernistic designs seemed to proclaim that there was a life not paralleled by that of any other place. Sidney and his friends seemed a carefree crowd, not altogether moral, perhaps, but gay, yes, and free. There one wasn't harried mornings by a shrieking alarm that meant that the 7:30 suburban electric would be due in half an hour, and that always and forever office hours began at 8. He'd call Janice and tell her he must go to San Francisco to care for some of the firm’s business. “Better good lie than a poor truth,” he thought. Perhaps at Sidney’s he'd discover what was the matter with himself, and with his portion of life. He stepped briskly toward the rail- way station that was just an hour’s ride from the respite that he began to anticipate so eagerly. A softly lighted florist'’s window attracted his attention. There were pots of Spring flowers, hyacinths, tulips and jonquils. ‘White hyacinths, Janice's favorite flower. He had got them for her birthdays, their anniversaries and the two times that she had been in the hospital enduring agonizing pains of chiidbirth, that they might have their solemn, steady, sturdy son, and happy, singing Mary Ann. John's conscience made a futile effort to reproach him. On a seat in the waiting room sat & young mother with two small chil- dren—about the size of Sonny and Mary Ann. They looked as though they might have been there several hours. The girl was asleep with her head in her mother’s lap. Several large, bulging bags sat on the floor beside them. The mother looked tired. Janice’s face, as he had left her that morning, rose before him. She had looked tired in spite of an always ready smile. The children kept her at home rather closely. Perhaps he hadn't been as cheerful of late as he used to be. He, should have stayed with the children more often and let Janice slip out a bit. The station was crowded with a homeward-bound throng of workers and shoppers. A group of chattering girls passed. Then a group of Boy Scouts in uniform. They were only a FRENCH CHATEAUX DRUG ON MARKET Many Remain Empty Despite Low Rent. PARIS (#).—Chateaux with 40 rooms and a haunted tower for rent at 7 cents a year—and no takers—are glut- ting the real estate market. Enormous taxes on big estates, the high costs of keeping grounds and gar- dens in condition, and the frequent and heavy repairs that must be made to the ancient buildings, explain why historic chateaus are going begging. Owners gladly rent them at 1 franc a year if the tenant pays the expenses. What to do with the chateaux is worrying realtors. Even when owners are financially able to maintain the places they usually don’t want to live in them. Lack of modern plumbing and heat- ing is one reason. Servants with twentieth century ideas nearly all re- fuse to work in the gloomy places. Even the government won't take them any more. Several owners have tried presenting them to the state or bequeathing them in their wills, so as to save their children expense. NOTICE 1S HEREBY GIVEN THAT THE undersigned. Grayson M.-P. Murphy. Sonny had been asking to join the Scouts alter his next birthday. Some friends of his and Janice’s were at the ticket wipdow. He hoped t] wouldn't no- tice him. They were both laugh- ing. The Hender- sons always seem- ed happy —had a fine son, too. BRI A couple at- tracted his atten- tion. The man was & neighbor of Sidney’s; had a studio close to his. John had met him several times, but hadn’t noticed him particularly before. His face was pink from too close a shave. Under close scrutiny he had a fleshy, overindulged appearance. His trou- sers must have been made by an expert tailor to fit so well over his water- melonlike abdomen. His cream- colored spats over the shiny black shoes were almost an echo of his pasty face over the heavy black overcoat. John could see that his shirt collar wasn't quite clean. He couldn’t recall ever having seen the fussily dressed little woman who was the man's companion. Wiry blond hair fiuffed beneath her tight little hat in an untidy abundance. Her cheeks flushed unnaturally, a bloom manifestly applied by middle age in a wistful effort to recapture something of a youth long past. Her eyes were on the mother with the two small children. It seemed to John that they wore a hungry look. The man spied John and crowed “Hello, old thing! Going our way? e stood smiling expectantly. A hurricane of impressions swirled through John's brain: The stuffy train with this smirking fool braying in his ear—suggestive jokes—Sidney's studio, with a whole bevy of soiled Bohemians like this one—loud colors, loud music—noisy, opinionated voices —too much wine—old women trying to be young, young women who looked old before their time— John spoke with sudden conviction. he told the man. “I'm going John climbed aboard the suburban electric. The sky had cleared and changed from a smoky blue to a soft rose. Alighting, he turned down & short, orderly street with rows of small bun- galows, fronted by tiny lawns on either side. He was carrying a bulky pack- age. As he opened the back door of one of the tiny bungalows, Janice, a sweet- faced young woman in a fresh print dress greeted him. His two immacu- late children gleefully clasped him about the knees. The spicy odor of gingerbread filled the room. A fluffy gray cat was drinking milk from a saucer under the table set for four. John held out the package to Janice, whose eyes brightened and grew moist with tenderness as he said: “Hyacinths. (Copyright, 1934.) PART-TIME FARMERS PREVALENT IN I0WA Dr. Wakely, State College Sociol- ogist, Declares Homestead- ers Are Permanent. AMES, Iowa () .—Tilling the soill of Iowa's fertile fields these days is a new crop of agriculturists—the part- time farmers. Situated on outskirts of cities on patches averaging eight acres, the part-time farmers or subsistence homesteaders came with the depres- sion, and they're here to stay, says Dr. Ray E. Wakely, Iowa State Col- lege sociologist. He has concluded a survey of part- time farming activities in seven “typ- ical” Jowa cities—Waterloo, Dubuque Centerville, Cedar Rapids, Oskaloosa. Ottumwa £nd Burlington. Dr. Wsiely beses his belief in tie permanency of the part-time farm movement on the fact that his sur vey shows that the rage inves. ment of these homestead groups is $2.838. However, the pari-time farmers de- pend on cther pursuits for the larger part of their incomes, Dr. Wakely seys. In most instances they are em- ployed in city factorles and till thei fields In spare hour But they have become so enam- ored of their new surroundings, Dr Wakely believes, that not even & re- turn of widespread prosperity would drive them back to city flats.
