U. . ASKS RESCUE OF MISSIONARIES Diplomats Seek Expedition to Bandit Zone to Save Couple and Infant. By the Associated Press. SHANGHAIL, December 13.—United States diplomatic authorities exerted | every effort yesterduy to effect the | rescue of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Stam, American missionaries, and their two | months old baby, who have been | abducted by Chinese bandits. Word of the plight of the young couple, married less than two years, | was received by the China inland mission station here. | The mission said fears also were felt for the safety of two other mis- sionaries, Rev. C, Motor Powered Only by Light Demonstrated in New York Search for Machine. Operated by Sun- light Proves Effect of Yellow Green Light on Platinum Holds Key. BY HOWARD W. BLAKESLEE, Associated Press Bcience Editor. NEW YORK, December 13 —The peculiar effect of yellow-green light on platinum is the secret of success of 8 new electric motor, which draws its electricity directly from light. The motor, demonstrated last night | for the first time, is a new step in the search for machines that can be | harnessed directly to sunlight. This one, the size of a thumb, nev- ertheless shows how big machines might be operated without human la- bor, other than manufacturing the parts and setting them up in the sun. The little motor was shown to the| New York Electrical Society by Ellis | L. Manning. physicist. It is the re- sult of a new type of “cell” invented by Dr. C. W. The entire power came from four small, round, flat metal discs, lying i ter of an inch thick, coated with a thin layer of selenium and on top of that a film of platinum so thin it was semitransparent. Selenium is “light- sensitive” and accounts for conversion of light into electricity. But by far the largest part of the electricity produced came from the thin film of platinum. Scientists do not yet know the reason. The light which did most of the work on the platinum was yellow-green, the color to which the human eye is most sen- sitive. The new motor takes only 2 per cent of the energy from sunlight, which means a plate an acre in ex- tent would produce probably not more than 10 horsepower. 1If other metals or chemicals can be added to the plate, which take the energy out of other rays of light as effectively as the platinum film does the yellow-green, there may be a dis- like four silver dollars under the lamp. | tinct gain in power.
