B—4 NORE RODMURCE AT ST, ELABETHS Supt. White Seeks Addition- al Buildings to Relieve Overcrowdedness. Additional buildings at St. Eliza- beth's Hospital to overcome crowded conditions are recommended by Supt. ‘William A. White in his annual report to the Secretary of the Interior, made public today. St. Elizabeth’s has been growing so rapidly, Dr. White said in submitting estimates for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1936, that it is still at a loss to provide the necessary beds, notwith- standing additional buildings erected. There has just been completed a male receiving building for 400 beds and there is now under construction a female receiving building for 300 beds. ‘The hospital at present is overcrowded to the extent of about 900 beds. 200 Annual Increase. ‘The increase each year is about 200 beds, Dr. White said, so during the next two years there will be a short- age of from 500 to 600 beds unless | other buildings are erected. With this shortage of beds in mind, the superintendent has included in the estimates an item for four con- tinuous-treatment buildings at $200,- 000 each, or a total of $800,000. “This will provide approximately 600 beds,” the report said, “and un- less there is an unusual increase, will permit us to provide a bed for each patient without overcrowding. This form of building would permit the construction at the rate of $1,333 per bed, which is very low for a fireproof building.” $1,218,780 Estimated. An estimate of $1,218780 for the support, clothing and treatment of the patients was recommended, the rate being based on an estimate of $1.80 per capita per day. Dr. White warned that prices “seem to be on the up- grade” due to the influences of N. R. A. codes. Any increases in mainte- nance costs, he reminded, must be in- cluded in the appropriation. The Public Works Administration allotted funds during the past year for the new female receiving building and for 13 reconditioning projects at the hospital. An increase of 210 patients at the hospital during the year brought the number on June 30 last, to a total of 5,191, JOHN DS PARTY OFF Christmas Custom at Daytona Beach Again Omitted.
