Mrs. George H. Dern, wife of the Secretary of War, attended the meet- ing yesterday afternoon in behalf of the talking book for the blind, held in the home of Mrs. Hugh A. Drum. Mrs. Dern, who is chairman of the Washington Talking Book Committee, spoke; Mrs. Gifford, who represents the American Foundation for the Blind, demonstrated the machine and also present was Mrs. Harry H. Wood- ring, wife of the Assistant Secretary of War. Mrs. Drum is co-chairman of the committee with Mrs. Dern. Mrs. Harold L. Ickes, wife of the Secretary of the Interior, will not ob- serve her days at home in December, but will receive Wednesdays after January 1. The Ambassador of Japan and Mme. Saito entertained at luncheon Sunday in honor of the United States Minister to China and Mrs. Nelson Johnson, who are on leave in their country. Astrom, who will leave Wash- ingtqn the end of the month, will be the guest in whose honor the Minister of the Irish Pree State and Mrs. Mac- White will entertain at dinner this evening in the legation. Minister As- trom will spend a few days in New York before sailing January* for Fin- land. The newly-appointed Minister of Finland, Mr. Eero Jarnefelt, will ar- rive in this country from Finland, where he has been undersecretary of state, about January 5. He will be accompanied by Mme, Jarnefelt. Mme. Prochnik, wife of the Minister of Austris, will give another of the series of at homes this afternoon, when she will have receiving with her her daughter, Mile. Valerie Prochnik. Constitution day of Siam was cele- brated yesterday afternoon with a de- lightful reception given in the legation by the Siamese Minister, Prince Damras Damrong Devakula, and Princess Damras. The legation was warm and bright with its yellow satin furnish- ings, maroon tapestries and numerous bowls of pink roses, yellow chrysan- themums and white carnations. The Minister and Princess Damras received in the drawing room, which is at the head of the stairway. Thelr daughter, Princess Varndipy, stood with them. Princess Damras wore & gown of black velvet, long and closely fitting, on the bodice of which was & yoke of crystal beads. Princess Varn- dipy had on a bright blue crepe gown trimmed with a little turnover collar made of brilliants. These also edged the cuffs of the long sleeves.
