Bishopp of the Bureau of Ento- mology, Department of Agriculture, an- nounced today following a visit to that section. Dr. Bishopp made studies en route to the camp sector, he said, and while a few of the ticks were found this side of the Blue Ridge Mountains, not one was discovered at the camp itself. So enthusiastic was Dr. Bishopp over the healthful conditions that prevail at the camp that he volunteered to The Star the additional information that the water there is excellent and that very few mosquitoes infest . the area “We get many, many calls here” Dr. Bishopp said at his office, “and it seems to be the disposition of some the woods this Summer because of the parents to keep their children out of THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, GIRL SCOUT CAMP IN VIRGINIA WITHOUT SPOTTED FEVER TICKSI |Government Entomologist Says Inspection Revealed|rabio ¢ Healthful Conditions and Not Even Mosquitoes. tick and the danger of fever. Well, I'd say that the situation is not ‘dan- gerous,’ bt that it calls merely for ‘caution.’ That caution consists chief- ly in preventing the ticks from re- maining on the body for six hours or more, and that can be accomplished by close examination two or three times a day.” The chief preventive for tick infec- tion, Dr. Bishopp reiterated, is simply brushing off the insects as they are found on the body. If a tick imbeds itself in the flesh, however, the sci- entist advises the application of iodine with & round-pointed toothpick on the tiny wound. He added that while he has moved about almost constantly in tick-infest- ed territory in pushing his studies of the insects, only one of the ticks suc- ceeded in imbedding itself in his skin. And that, he asserted, was through his own carelessness in neglecting to ex- amine his legs as soon as he came) i in from the woods.
