NEW YORK, June 29.—Bonds were active, but price trends were mixed. Later in the session speculative issues firmed up, but some offerings of high- grade securities appeared. Early strength in United States Gov- emment obligations was attributed to Federal Reserve buying. Most German descrip- tions, however, continued lower. The rapldity with which Canada sold $60,- 000,000 of 15-month 4 per cent notes here, the recent narrowing of the gap between the American and Dominion dollars, and the pick-up in business in Canada caused further purchasing of government and raii issues in that group. Before some offerings came into the better grade of industrials, Bethlehem Steel 58 of 1936 reached a new high for the vear. In the speculative divi- sion there was some profis-taking in American Ice 5s, Hudson Coal 5s and udebaker 6s. Later Colon Oil 6s moved down about a point. Colorado Industrial recovered ctionally. Cali- fornia Packing 5s duplicated their peak for the year. Crown Cork & Seal 6s slightly firmed. Market Averages By the Associated Press. afeanaton ERRBIIR AR I LuoDbIWORNI C Low (1932). High (1831).. 5: Boprthine toss | Detroit and other Midwestern markets. Prices in the wholesale fruit and ve‘mble markets were holding fairly well near the first of July, says the United States Department of Agricul- ture Bureau of Agricultural Economics market news service. Potato values sagged a little after the recent rise be- cause receipts of the new crop were again increasing. Onions nenerally! maintained the higher levels reached; during June. Peach markets improved somewhat in tone with the arrival of the midseason varieties of better qual- ity. Supplies of apples and melons are increasing. Movement of Southern| California grapes has begun. Shipments of fruits and vegetables | continued at a nearly uniform rate| through the second half of June, averaging about 2500 cars daily running little below the figures of & year ago. Potatoes Hold Higher Prices. The sharp advances in the to market during the second half of June were faily well maintained near the first of July, despite increasing receipts from Virginia and various Midwestern sources. Shipments of new potatoes | were increasing a little faster than the | old crop movement dwindled, leaving the total daily potato receipts near 700 carloads. Maine seems likely to finish with a season's total bctween 44.000 and 45,000 cars, compared with 53.000 | last season. The other Northern States are nearly done. Virginia is shipping about half the supply of new potatoes. Arkansas leads in Midwestern markets, but Missouri and Kansas are beginning and a good yield is expected from the somewhat reduced acreage there. A slightly weaker tone prevailed in Virginia producing sections near the end of the month. but most sales still range $3.25 to $3.50 per barrel at ship- ping points. Virginia Eastern Shore Cobblers brought $3.75 to $4.50 a barrel in the large Eastern markets, or $1.50 t0 $2.50 per 100 pounds. Western Shore potatoes brought $3.75 to $4 per barrel in Baltimore. Liberal receipts of East- ern potatoes are reported at Chicago, and | Some lots were selling close to $5 per barrel in Detroit near the end of June. Most of the large Eastern markets re- ported moderate supplies of new pota- toes and rather slow demand. Maine potatoes were still being shipped at the rate of about 30 carloads daily and sell- ing at fairly steady prices in Eastern markets at a jobbing range of $1.80 to $2 per 100 pounds. Onion. Markets Steady. New crop yellow onions from Virginia followed a steady range of prices the last week of June at 75 cents to $1 per bushel in Eastern cities. At the same | time there were & few lots of old onion: | of only fair market condition selling i various city markets at 50 to 75 cents | per 50 pounds. DETROIT, June 29.—Barring some further undeveloped production econ- | omies in the automobile industry, the possibility of price imcreases for finished cars appears likely to occupy the at- tention of not a few producers in the various flelds within the near future. Although adoption of policies to con- form with the industrial recovery act is awaited before definite commitments are made regarding wage adjustments, there is a general disposition in the in- dustry to restore some of the cuts af- fected during the last two years. Motorcar manufacturers hear that the steel industry is giving sympathetic consideration to a proposal to increase wages 10 per cent. Any such increase, of course, would be reflected, they point out, in an increase in the cost of raw materials for the automobile industry. Their research work, they say, will ultimately disclose some other sources of manufacturing economy, but for the present nothing has been over- looked to permit economical manu- facturing practices, The automobile industry’s represen- tatives studying the terms of the in- dustrial recovery act and its application to the gmkmg of motorcars already have held two sessions to consider a recommendation to the manufacturers, but apparently still lack a unanimity of ideas.
