FINANCIAL. ANALYSIS OF TRADE OUTLOOKIS GIVEN First of Month Summary Pre- pared by Standard Sta- tistics Company. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 4.—The first of the month outlook for various di- visions of industry and trade is sum- marized by the Standard Statistics Co,, of New York, as follows: Advertising—Although the volume of magazine advertising continues to de- cline, lineage in February magazines made the most favorable comparison with a year earlier (21.5 per cent lower) for approximately a year. Agricultural Machinery—A marked revival from the current low level of operations is not in early prospect. Aircraft—Manufacturing units will do well to equal the relatively unsatis- | factory profiis leve! of 1932, during the initial half of 1933. Automobiles—Sales data clearly re- veal the continuing trend of demand toward the lower priced offerings in the passenger car field. Automobile parts—The trade at large will experience & net loss during the first and probably also the second quar- ter of 1933. Automobile tires—Replacement pur- chases for the current year are esti- mated at 20 per cent below the limited 1932 volume. Building—The stabilization of build- ing activity is being continued, tenta- tively indicating a full seasonal expan- sion of operations during the Spring months. Chemicals—The chemical industry will continue to display better than | average profits performance during the near term, at least. Coal—Only the most efficient coal producers will be able to avoid deficits during the initial half of the current ar. ,emecl!‘ltul equipment—Sales of re- frigerators and other domestic appli- ances, which have been comparatively stable thus far during the depression, are likely to be less satisfactory in the coming Summer months. Food products—Except in the meat packing and canning fields, most food producers should continue to maintain a notably better earning showing than that of industry in general. Leather and shoes—Relatively large distributors’ stocks of shoes point quite definitely toward a further relative con- traction during March. Machinery—Restoration of profitable operations must necessarily await a more decided expansion in sales than is now indicated. Medicines—Earnings of representative eompanies for the initial 1933 quarter, it is estimated. will be no more than 30 per cent below the corresponding 1932 experience. Office Equipment—The usual seasonal betterment in domestic sales of office equipment probably was not fully real- ized during February Paper—A majority of units will be| unable to fully cover expenses during | the next several months, while vari- | ous financial readjustments appear inevitable. Petroleum—Strong efforts are now | being made to zlleviate underlying influ- | ences by a more rigid enforcement of proration policies. Radio—There is little possibility for restoration of radio profits during the | next several months. Railroad Equipment—A resumption of profitable operations must await a material pick-up in rail traffic. Retail Trade—Profits during the first half of this year will continue generally | sale at 20 for large clean eggs and 16 9 | are easy due to heavy receipts from the | 187 | for mixed colored broilers, 1% to 2% unsatisfactory. | Steel—Ingot production for March | should average about 19 per cent of | capacity. Sugar—Operations of sugar producers | probably will continue under the handi- | cap of depressed prices until the peak | of the production season has passed. Textiles—Operations in_cotton goods | mills generally are being well sustained, | and the rate of incoming orders in the silk division is being stimulated by the low prices now quoted. Theaters—Theater admission prices have been reduced nearly 25 per cent, on average, during the past few months, but unit attendance volumes have failed to respond to an offsetting degree. Tobacco—Leading cigarette producers are making headway in strengthening the competitive status of their brands and in stimulating total consumption by reclaiming business lost to hand- rolled volumss. Baltimore Markets Special Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, Md., March 4.—Due to the bank moratorium declared by Gov. Ritchie last Friday sales of poultry, eggs and produce have been greatly curtailed the past week as thousands have their funds tied up in the banks here and business generally is being transacted about 90 per cent on credit. The banks are expected to reopen some time next week, however, which will naturally stimulate business and a general improvement is lcoked for on all lines. The egg market continues quiet and easy in sympathy with other leading markets with receipts of nearby stock ample for the demand, which despite the low prices prevailing continues only fair. The few offerings on the ex- change, however. meet with ready sale, but only desirable, fresh laid stock will bring top prices of 15 cents a dozen for hennery whites, 55 pounds to the case and up, and 14 for current receipts. Duck eggs made their first appearance on_the market this week and the light offerings meet with ready to 18 for mediums. Shippers are ad- vised not to hold their eggs, but ship promptly in single case lots if neces- sary, as all held stock has to be sold at a discount.
