WOMEN'’S FEATURES. Spring Fashions in Washington Shops (Continued From Sixth Page) result is extellent. The adaptability of this sort of frock to several oceasions will appeal to you instantly. The dress pection of this kind of costume is usually a gayly flowered print, and the detach- ables in plain silk or woolen. Dark red with white is combined in a Jovely Summer silk. The large flower pattern in white is sufficiently broken o keep the design from being too evi- dent. There is a graceful scarf collar that covers the arms to the elbow and a cluster of dark red silk flowers at the Jeft side at the waist. The skirt is rether long and moves easily as the; model walks. Another de red with | small white figures is a street dress | trimmed Wwith white pique vest and | bows—very smart. A majority of the Jovely print frocks depend on cut and the use of bows for their trimming— bows at the neck, bows at the waist, bows on the sleeves. These dresses have long bracelet s, too, the kind that are full and elastic at the wrist. They take a wide piece of material and swathe it around the waist and even down to the hips. There are some very attractive prints in small floral designs using dark and medium brown, tan, yel- low and white. Many blue silks have White coln spots and large egg-shaped designs close together, 5o that yow do not see much background. A ~pretty | light beige silk with bolero and three- | quarter length sieeves has a large brown moire ribbon bow at the front of the neck and a sash of the same brown ribbon tied in the front. Beige and brown with a touch of orange s good, too. This afternoon frock has a bolero around one side only and is caught up on the other shoulder with | cylindrical ornzments of brown and orange, while the sash is half and half of these two colors. Another pretty afternoon dress is in blue chalk pastel with Irish lace yoke, while its mate nearby is pink "pastel trimmed with Wwhite crgandy; both very youthful and altogether adorable. Pale beige with beet red is a happy color combination. The red gives just | the right dash and character to the | neutral tone of the beige. The Wssh-‘ ington shops have been showing some | of these and they attract attention. One has a deep cowl cape collar of ted over a belge dress with very, straight lines, having a section of fine THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. The use of patent leather is notable and many of the models are worked out in black, blue, red and brown patent leather—also white for later wear, so that you can get just the right complement to your suit or coat. Novelty is registered in intricate and unusual fastening; enamel and marquisite clips, ball clasps, pyramid tops, Wrist straps, silver mesh chain with twin silver rings and endless other devices. An envelope handbag rounded at the bottom like a turnover tart is an excellent design and comfortable to carry and fits under the arm well. This type of purse comes in all the popular colors and is made of light calf skin with binding of contrast- good-looking brown patent leather bag is lapped over in true envelope fashion of silver and two triangles of silver extending beyond the flap on each side; very modern in feeling. A black patent leather bag is scored off diagonally into squares of moderate size with red dots | at the intersection of the lines. The | clasp 1s a cylinder of black with six red rings around it. A very dashing red bag has & buckle and strap of white. The gs of glossy snakeskin are Very at- tractive with black and dark blue. A new treatment of leather is called veil dot and is, as its name implies, studded with tiny dots. There are adorable new little lace bags for evening in White and black and all the pastels. They have rhinestone ball fastenings and small silver chains. Spring gloves seem to feature rose- beige, eggshell, pear], brown, black and white, and are short for the tailored | suit, either one button or short pull- ons. They may have flaring cuffs for the | more dressy suit or coat with sleeves trim at the wrist, and for the three- uarter bell sleeves a four-button slip- <n will be the choice. So you must look to your sleeves when selecting your gloves in order to have the right effect. Some four-button slip-ons in brown have modernistic appliques of beige. Some have new designs in stitching and lots of fancy cuffs. Speaking of appliques reminds of a display of dainty hankies with ap- pliqued designs both modernistic ‘nd ren%lmc. Some have elongated initials done in colored applique on white and some have figures on horseback galiop- ing color, as beige with brown, etc. A | with its point tipped with a triangle | | AT LEPT: BEIGE WITH BROWN MOIRE RIBBON. For the most part, they are printed in geometrical designs. Candy-striped scarfs are effective on black suits. Shoes like all the other :ccemrles, of Spring are colorful and designed to meet all tastes. In line with the| prevalence of blue as a general Spring favorite, the shops are showing blue kid shoes, Ehin pumps, cut-outs with trim of snakeskin and ankle straps and | sandals in various styles of openness | Sandals are popular. The trousers are much narrower and are called sincks and the outfit is apt to take on a nautical aspect with lots of blue and white, and anchor devices as :Hmhu. but stripes and dots are good, 00. And to top it all off what sort of a hat will you have? A saflor, beret, turban. cloche, hat with cuff brim or a more formal type with flowers at the back or a wide brim for later Summer frocks? The shops are full of fascin- ating hats and you will want several to match your different costumes. The straws are popular this Spring in both fine weaves and coarse ones. Balli- buntls are with us again and many hats are fashioned of crystal cloth and other materials with queer names and new looking surfaces. The close types are very smart for suits and coats but when the warmer days come, a brim is perhaps more acceptable. The covered shoulder is gen- erally accepted as becoming and it broadens the shoulder either by means of gracefully draped scarf treatments which may have their loose ends in the back and be caught together at the waistline, or by meanst of crests of Jace. That is, little lace ruffies over the tops of the armtioles, or by crossed wide bands that just come over the tops of the shoulders, these bands con- tinuing to the waistline front and back. There is a tendency in the new- est models to have the skirt fullness start from a higher point than during the Winter. This produces a graceful effect and is particularly suitable for chiffon and the flower printed silks. Lace continues a favorite in white and black as well as the pastels. ‘These dresses often have jackets of their own materia, and at times are worn with sile or velvet capes or short wraps. A dull blue lace dress for afternoon has a satin sash of the same thade and is wern with a wide brimmed blue lacey straw, with one lerge pink rose on the side. Just made for a Another clever ensemble is of white satin_When the model ceme in, tall and willowy, with dark hair and very little make-up, she appeared to be swathed in white satin in some mirac- ulous way, with a big black fur collar WE'LL BE READY SOON, ESTC around the neck. As she walked down the run-way she began to unwind the satin wrap which was crossed in the front and passed around the back, then brought forward again to hang over the arms, and here is the secret: It was one very, very long piece of wide | white satin with a short band of black | fur attached to the center, where it would come around the neck! It was very clever and with the classic sim- plicity of the dress beneath, it was stunning. An exquisite greenish blue marqui- | dette in the same collection has a deep and wide decolletage front and back, | the back being the deeper, with soft narrow drapery twisted in cowl fash- | ion. Beneath this is a section em- broidered in crystal tubes and at the | | waistline a loose self-adjusting section | of material allowing for slight differ- | ences of figure. At the bottom of | this the dress is moulded tightly to the figure and is again embroidered. The fullness begins high and the em- | broidery gradually loses itself, so that from knee length to the floor the gown is_soft, billowy and floating. | No description of new evening clothes would be complete without mentioning | the long sleeves, in evidence usually as | | a part of lace or chiffon jacket which | | apparently is part of the dress and yet may be removed if desired. However, there are dresses with long sleeves that stay in. ) Use of Flowers. | JHAVE you noticed that flowers are | being used a great deal mund‘ | the front of the waist on chiffon dresses? | It is an attractive Springtime gesture, | these garlands. A lovely flame chiffon | | is garlanded in white silk flowers just | | below the scarf drapery at the waist. | This immediately suggests many pos- | sibilities for a bit of remodeling too. Another use of flowers Is on a lovely flowered chiffon evening dress, following the same general lines as the dress just | described, but at the front of the waist is & cluster of flowers of colors matching those in the gown and they are sewed on like a flat bouquet directly in the | front. There are so many ways of | using flowers. Accessories. }ir\ND bags and gloves in all their variztions of design and material | are meking decided overtures to Spring shoppers and whether you are complet- ing your new costume, adding a fresh touch to an ensemble not quite so new, or just looking for an acceptable gift, these two items suggest themselves as possibilities and they are always fas- | cinating.
