FINANCIAL RAIL BOND ISSUES, MAKE GOOD GAINS Other Groups Sell Off Sharply, However—U. S. Issues Little Changed. BY F. H. RICHARDSON. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 6—Railroad bonds improved substantially today on further assurances {rom Washington that the relief expected from the Re- construction Finance Corporation would not be interfered with, but the rest of the domestic corporation list and almost the entire body of foreign dol- lar issues sold off sharply. United States Government issues were little changed. Trading was only moderately active. The market opened steady. The criti- cism that Secretary of the Treasury Mills made of the House revenue bill in his statement to the Senate was gratifying to the financial community and occasioned a much firmer tone in those bonds expected to benefit directly from the Government's relief measures. Weakness in stocks, however, caused fresh drops in industrial and utility bonds Union Pacific first 4s, of the highest investment type. sagged 3 points on the sale of about five bonds. Then it re- covered abruptly. This bond is not af- fected by developments at Washington, excepting possibly the desire of in- vestors 1o get into tax-exempt issues. The same could be said of the declines in such prime investment bonds as American Telephone 5s, New York Telephone 4',s. National Dairy Prod- ucts 5'4s, Atchison general 4s and the highly rated Government-guaranteed jssues of the Canadian National Rail- ways. Washin;torr Stogk Exchange. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 6—Pronounced | pressure on public utility shares and the relative steadiness of petroleum stocks . | were the outstanding features today of a Curb Exchange session generally marked by falling quotations. Electric Bond & Share duplicated its previous low level as Cities Service de- clined fractionally and touched 47, for the first time. American Gas & Elec- tric, American Light & Traction, Com- monwealth Edison, Middle West Utili- ties, Associated Gas & Electric A and United Light & Power A were a few of the numerous utilities moving into new low ground during the first several hours. Selling in the public utilities repre- sented liquidation from the interior, especially Chicago and Cleveland, but also the disposal of stocks by discour- aged holders. The weekly electrical out- | put statisties showed a decrease of 11.9 per cent from the corresponding week of 1931. This brought electrical output to a new low level for the depression period. A week ago the production of electricity showed a drop of 10.3 per cent from the same 1931 period. Food shares appeared on the tape in increasing amounts. Fajardo Sugar struck a_new low. Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea, which earned $1340 a share on the common for the year ended February 27, 1932, against $13.86 in 1931, ignored this favorable income statement during the first several hours. Meanwhile, Swift & Co., Swift Interna- # | tional, Willow Cafeteria, Happiness Candy and similar shares sold off. g -2 General Italian Edison Electric, 1931 net_income, $5.879.844. vs. $7.073.230. CHICAGO, April 6.—Grain prices rallied quickly today from Initial down- turns that were associated with weak- ness of securities and with setbacks in wheat quotations at Liverpool. Drought districts of the domestic Winter wheat belt reported high winds and no rain of any consequence. Opening ;-1 cent lower, wheat aft- | erward recovered in full. Corn started 35-5 off and later scored gains. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, April 6.—Pig iron pro- duction in March fell to the lowest point since August, 1921, and the orders that are being depended upon to bring improvement to the steel trade have not yet materialized, says Iron Age in its_weekly review. Pig_iron production last month was at a daily rate of 31,201 gross tons, only a little above the minimum of the 1921 depression, which was 27,889 tons daily in ._I;xgy ;)f that year. “The loss in steelmaking iron during March." the review continued, “was almost 8 per cent, thereby confirming the apparent downward trend ing steel ingot production. Merchant pig -fron fell off only slightly, 94 tons a day, against 1,906 tons a day for steel- making iron. There was a net loss of four furnaces during the month, 60 having been in service on April-1, against 64 on March 1. “Although conditions still seem-to favor some rise in steel production-this month, the orders that are being..de- | pended upon to bring about such im- | provement have been delayed. This 's particularly true of automobile ‘and railroad tcnnage.” | | _— | FREIGHT LOADINGS DROP, By the Assoclated Press Loadings of revenue freight dropped |off sharply during the ‘eu?k ended March 26 as compared with the previous week when a record high level for the vear was established. And they have produced the greatest values in the history of the industry. They priced their products on an antici- pated and hoped for volume which the industry has not realized. Therefore in our opinion many manu- facturers will probably raise prices. No matter what make of car you intend to buy, you can save money by buying now. Not only save money by buying before prices are advanced by manufacturers, butin addition you can probably save a Federal sales tax on all motor cars. AUBURN AUTOMOBILE COMPANY, Aybum, Indiana.
