THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, PRECORIOUS PUPL | CALEDAMSHT Cross Between Genius and Nuisance, Says Northwest- ern Professor. By the Assoclated Press. ! EVANSTON, I, March 5—With Northwestern University deciding to | experiment in the education of superior | youngsters, the question arises as m‘ when a sfudent is precocious and why. | Is he merely a bright boy who's had all the breaks? | The preliminary announcement merely sets forth that 12 precocious youths—six boys and six girls—who can | meet the entrance requirements and are‘ from 13 to 15 ye will be ad- mitted to the ul y in September. | Called Misfits. | It remains for Dr. John J. B. Mor- gan, associate professor of psychology at the university and or of several books on_sbnormal ology, to ex- plain. Of medium height, dark and | abounding in nervous energy, Dr. Mor- | gan declares 1t isn't enough to describe | the precocious student as merely a | bright boy or girl who has enjoyed un- usual advantages. | To him such youths are crosses be- | tween geniuses and nuisances. simply don't fit into norms life. " That is why univers hitherto refused them ad; “A precocious child,” h who was born with an ¢ ent co- ordination of his nervous and physical faculties. The first signs of precocity appear early. Where the ordinary child regards blocks as merely objects to stack on top of each other the superior one distinguishes between them, On one he notes an ‘L' and on another a 'Wv' He begins to wonder why there isn’t an ‘L’ on both, and what relation an % is to & ‘W’ “If his parents co-operate, he soon learns the alphabet. He learns other things the same way, far ahead of the ordinary child. “The difference between a precocious child and one less intelligent is that the precoclous one is constantly dis- | tinguishing the difference between ob- Jects and, instead of losing interest then and there, makes every effort to deter- mine why they are different. A Constant Danger. “The precocious youngster, however, faces the constant danger of becoming interested in only one subject too early in life and neglecting all others. Thus he becomes a genius on the violin or in chemistry or finance, but ignorant ©f everything else. “The more precocious an_individual is, the Iater in life he should specialize. I believe President Scott intends to de- | lay as much as possible this specializa- tion of the dozen youngsters he plans to select. In addition to giving them the widest latitude within reason in their studies, he wishes to get them in- terested in all the outside activities| possible.” Northwestern's experiment was in-| spired for the most part by Harold Fin- ley, now a junior, who entered when he was 13 years old, and Betty Clark Secley, who enrolled at 14 and who earned practically all of her expenses until she was forced to quit last semes- | ter because of circumstances over which she had no control. Finley and Miss Seeley were out of | tune with campus life. Other students were too old for them. Finley's only “date” in his two years’ college life was with Miss Seeley—and now she’s gone. | —e Kashmir is the only predominantly lohammedan state in India ruled by & Hindu.
