THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., MARCH 6. 1932 PART ONE. EXPORTS 10 RUSSIA DWINDLE FOR U.3. Marked Drop Due to Curbing of Credits, Declare Soviet Officials. Soviet Russia’s trade with the United States, which for the last two years has amounted to $229,246,000, is now dwin- dling to an insignificant figure, it was revealed at the Commerce Department yesterday. The Amtorg Trading Cor- poration, in & statement made available at the department, blamed the reduc- tion on unfavorable credit terms and the difficulty of marketing Soviet prod- ucts in this country. In announcing final figures for the month’s foreign trade yesterday, the de- partment estimated January exports fo Russia at $714.638. as compared with $4,610,198 in December and $14,745.997 in January, 1931. The January report, however, showed that for the first time since November, 1929, American buyers brought more goods into this country ‘Ymm Russia than were shipped to that | nation. 34 in January, 6 in January, er. 1928, imports from were $1.057,000 and exports $892.000. Department officials attached no importance to this, contending it was due to seasonal demands Simultaneously with making public the January foreign trade figures, the department was in receipt of an official statement from Amtorg, the official rep- Imports were 1931 Russia Tesentative of the Soviet U in this y, revealing that ¥ the United States by tI in 1931 amounted to $51.232.000, & de- cline of 55 per cent from the total of $114,035,000 recorded in 1930, and of 47 per cent from the 1929 figures, $95,852.000. Amtorg placed its sales during last year at $18,595,000, a 34 per cent de- cline from those of the previous year. The total turnover of Amtorg Was $69.827.000 in 1931, as compared with $114,193,000 the year before, a decrease of 51 per cent. The dyop in the trade, according to the statement, was due primarily to “difficulties connected with the marketing of Soviet products in this country, as well as the unfavorable credit terms here as compared with those granted by European countries.” “This combination of facts resulted in the transfer of many large orders to Germany, England and other countries, the statement added.
