According to figures just published | by the British Board of Trade journal, the vear 1931 showed that the number of British subjects who returned to the jted Kingdom after abandoning res- idence abroad far exceeded the number who emigrated. There was a decrease of over 32.000 in 1931 from 1930 in the number of British subjects who went out into the empire. Most of this seems to be pointed by Gov. Woodruff of Connecti- cut to Investigate tuberculosis condi- tions in that State and in 1911 was a member of a commission appointed to take charge of five Connecticut sani- toria. He has been chairman of that commission since 1913. In 1928 Dr. Maher was named by President Coolidge as United States representative to the International Tu- berculosis Conference in Rome. Again in 1930, President Hoover reappointed Dr. Maher to attend the conference held on that occasion in Oslo. Dr. Maher is a member of the A ican Irish Historical Society and t New York Catholic Club. He is married and lives at 405 Orange st New Haven, Cor nounced as recipient of the Laetare Medal awarded by the University of Notre Dame. The medal has been given annually since 1885 on Laetare Sunday to some leader from the ranks of Catholic laity of the United States. Dr. Maher is chairman of the Con- necticut Tuberculosis Commission. He was born in New Haven, Conn., April 12, 1860, and was graduated from St. Charles’ College, Ellicott City, Md.. in | | 1881. He then entered Yale and was -|graduated from the Yale Medical | School in 1887. He did post-graduate work in England and Ireland Prom 1888 to 1899, Dr. Maher en- gaged in general practice in New Haven, but in 1900 turned his attention to the study of tube s.
