- BUILDER OF FAMED - SCHOONERS DIES ‘#Wizard of Essex” Launched Most of Gloucester and Boston Fleets. By the Associated Press. ESSEX, Mass, March 5—Arthur Dana Story, whose hand and eve shaped a great portion of the Gloucester and Boston fishing fleets, died suddenly to- day in his d ing above his ancient shipyard. ‘The tall old man who was known as the “Wizard of Essex,” devoted more than 50 of his 76 years to his craft, and from the little yard on the Essex River many famous vesesls were launched. If the stately fishing schooners he built there could be assembled and placed bow to stern, they would bridge more than five miles of the ocean they plied. That, however, could not be, for many of them found their last anchor- ages before their builder. It was at his yard that Story built several of the schooners which have contested with Canada for the Interna- tional Pisherman's Trophy. The grace- ful, thought the fastest schooner ever built, got her first taste of brine from one of Story’s ways. But she, after worrying the "Canadians, was lost before she could meet the Canadian champion, Bluenose. The Henry Ford and the Columbia also preceded their maker, the Colum- bia, 1923 contender, with all hands, leaving no clue to her fate. Two years ago, the 17th of the month, story launched his latest hope for in- ternational honors, the schooner Ger- trude L, Thebaud.
