AMERICANS GAIN OWN HERDIC MYTH North Woods Legend Creates Giant Who Subdued Angry River. (Editor’s note: The following article on Paul Bunvan, North America’s contribu- tion to folkiore. was written for the As- sociated Press Feature Service by James Stevens, student and author of the Bun- yan legend.) BY JAMES STEVENS. DETROIT, February 27.—When sheep herders, cow punchers and lumberjacks of ancient Greece sat at their camp- fires and told tall tales about a mighty man named Hercules, it is doubtful if they had any suspicion that poets would steal their stories for literature. But thus it happened, and the poets made the name of Hercules immortal, while readers forget that plain folks invented the character. ¥ Our American Hercules, the Paul Bunyan of the North Woods, is threat- ened with a like fate. The hero of countless tall tales told by woodsmen for 70 years, Mr. Bunyan, like Mr. Her- cules, has fallen into the hands of the poets and professors. Whether the American mythical héro will find a modern Homer remains to be seen. The river had ; a queer way of flowing, twisting in its | rock bed just like a giant auger, throw- ing up rock shavings in its banks, and s0 earning its name. Mr. Bunyan vowed to untwist the river. So he uprooted | seven hard rock hills, heaved trem into the big Auger's bed, and dammed the river. Then Mr. Bunyan tried to gentle the stream by petting it a dozen times a day, reaching down with his big hands and stroking the river's back, and speaking kind words | At last the river seemed to be tamed | It foamed and twisted no more behind the dam.
