e FEMINIST SEES VTR 7 ARl *Marie Verone Strategy Used in Fight for French Vote. (The the BY MARIA VERONE, Member of the Paris Bar_and President of the French League for Women's Rights. 1932, by the Associated Press). . Pebruary 27—French femi- nists have been aroused to a new fight for suffrage by the Chamber's recent action in passing &n electoral reform bill with an amendment giving women the vote. We know this is not a final victory. We know that the Senate is unfavorable © feminine emancipation. But the Chamber’s action is bound to have an influence on public opinion and on the Benators as well (The Senate has just referred the Chamber’s women suffrage plan to a | special committee.) ! Energies Awakened. The Chamber’s action on February 12 is particularly significant because it has awakened energies which have been somewhat lulled to sleep. Matters had to be brought to a head in order to stimulate the courage of some of the women who have not been militant enough. Now they have been aroused to the fight—a fight in which they must struggle hard before they win. We know that the majority of the Senate does not, wish to give women the right to vote in 1932, but by changing the opinion of. some of them we can change the majority. Even if they do not give us the vote this year, we shall not allow them to cling to the same point of view in the municipal elections of 1935 and in the legislative elections of 1936. We shall fight for the cause. ! ‘The electoral period will give us an | opportunity to spread propaganda. Everybody knows already what has happened in the Chantber through the press and the radio: we shall finish the work by spreading propaganda and in- formation through the meetings which we propose to hold and the notices which we shall post everywhere. We do not want to be the last in Europe to win the rights about which we have been taliing for the last 80 years. Recalls Jeanne Deroin, A few women began suffrage activities as early as the Revolution of 1848. Among them was Jeanne Deroin, who went from meeting to meeting asking that women be given the right to vote. Several years of silence followed and then the feminist movement gradually grew stronger, In 1919 the Chamber passed a law giving women the right 1o vote, but in 1922 the Senate defeated it by a majority of 22 votes. In 1925 the Chamber again passed the law, but the Senate avoided its discussion by a technical maneuver, and since that date has refused to discuss the question of women's suffrage. That passive resistence by the upper house has incited French women to em- ploy more energetic and violent means than they had ever used before. They staged manifestations in the Senate and held meetings in the villages, arousing the peasants to join the movement. Now they hope that the recent action by the Chamber will force the Senate to give French women the political gights for which they have waited o ng. — FORMER ORPHAN GIRL GETS $3,550,000 ESTATE Mrs. Blanche Karsch Given Clear Title to Property at Memphis.
